The letter X is one of the simplest, yet most enigmatic letters in use today. We’re not even sure how to pronounce it sometimes. The story of its origins is fuzzy.
Just look at the word for the name brand “Xerox.” One word, two very distinct pronunciations for x.
In Mexican Spanish, x has a place in the evolution of the language. It has generally replaced j in such words as “México” vs. “Méjico,” “Texas” vs. “Tejas,” and “Oaxaca” vs. “Oajaca.”
In Spanish, x and j have evolved in tandem. In Spanish names, for example, we often see x-j variants such as Ximenez vs. Jimenez, or Xavier vs. Javier.
But whereas in Mexican Spanish the pronunciations of letters are almost immutable, the letter x has several distinctly different pronunciations. Consider the varying pronunciation of the letter in words such as “México” (where the x sounds somewhat like our letter h), “Xochicalco” and “Taxco” (where the x sounds like our s), and “Mexica” (where the x sounds similar to our digraph sh—think “shoe”).
The letter x has held the fascination of some of our most renowned historical characters.
In the 17th century, the French philosopher, scientist, and mathematician René Descartes put x on the map, so to speak, when he introduced it to the world as the most common algebraic variable (along with y). Many of us can relate, perhaps with some trauma, to our high school lessons in algebra, where we struggled with defining, manipulating, and solving for x.
And then there is one of the world’s most unfathomable (or “pompous,” or “haughty”—take your pick, depending on your perspective) geniuses in our midst: Elon Musk, engineer, entrepreneur, and biggest shareholder of Tesla. We may recognize that this company specializes in electric vehicles and clean energy.
Elon has a fascinating obsession with the letter X. The most obvious display of this man’s enigmatic fixation on this cryptic letter in our alphabet is his recent seemingly hostile annihilation of the brand name Twitter and its conversion to X.
In 2002, Mr. Musk founded SpaceX, the manufacturer and launcher of state-of-the-art rockets and spacecraft. SpaceX also provides the high-speed network known as Starlink, a “satellite internet constellation.”
Elon’s enthrallment with X borders, at times, on the truly bizarre. Following the birth of his son in 2020, Elon announced that his son’s name was “X Æ A-12 Musk.”
The boy was facing the prospect of having an undecipherable name that he was going to have to explain to every single person he was to encounter throughout his entire life.
Mercifully, the State of California said, in effect, “Uh, no, you can’t name your child X Æ A-12, no matter how much you may want him to ‘stand out in the crowd.’ Your child’s name must include letters that are among the 26 in the English alphabet (so no Æ).”
Not to be dissuaded, the clever (in his mind, anyway) Mr. Musk declared that his boy’s first name would therefore be “X,” his middle name “AE A-XII,” and his last name would consist of the ho-hum, everyday family name: “Musk.”
We have to ask: Will this child grow up to be a man proud of his historically unique name? Will he suffer in painful, embarrassing, and excruciating silence the rest of his life?
Or will he feel “chosen” in the sense that his name bears the mark of the most intriguing letter in Western history?
