Most of us are aware of the story of George Santos, a Republican U.S. House of Representatives Congressman elected in November 2022. Actually, we think his name is George Santos. He has “embellished” his past so thoroughly, we may not ever know who, exactly, he really is.
“Embellished” is a polite euphemism. Apparently, Mr. Santos has lied profoundly to the American people, particularly to those who elected him based on his stated views and history. The story of his life that he provided was, as it turns out, a complete fabrication.
Politics being what they are, Mr. Santos was nonetheless embraced and welcomed into the Republican-majority House. Due to the Republicans’ razor-thin majority, Santos’ support and particularly his vote were desperately needed to allow Congressman Kevin McCarthy to become the speaker of the House of Representatives.
Despite strident calls from Democrats and influential voices from around the country for Mr. Santos to resign, he remains solidly in his seat on the House floor. Even credible accusations of his support for white supremacy and conspiracy theories have not dislodged Santos from one of the centers of American power. Many of those who voted for Mr. Santos feel betrayed and say that they would never have voted for him had they known the truth.
I will never forget the 1979 movie that I saw, “Being There,” featuring comedian Peter Sellers. It was about an astonishingly unsophisticated man, “Chance.” Chance was a simple-minded gardener who could speak authoritatively about only one topic: gardening.
To make a fascinating and long story very short, Chance’s eloquence regarding gardening was severely misinterpreted as profound wisdom in matters of, for example, the national economy. Without even trying, he deeply impressed those around him simply by talking about gardening. In time, he was regarded to be a natural “leader” with incisive intelligence and sophistication. One thing led to another, and eventually Chance found himself at the very pinnacle of power: the presidency of the United States.
Of course, this entire scenario is pure fiction. In real life, we don’t expect a gardener who never worked beyond his station in life to become a politician, much less the president.
On the other hand, up to the recent past, we never expected incorrigible, career “embellishers” (let’s call them) to rise to the highest levels of power in this country. In fact, it’s almost starting to feel as if lying—excuse me…embellishing—is a prerequisite for attaining admission to the more rarified spheres of sovereignty within certain factions of the political milieu.
I can just hear the conversations in the now-smoke-filled meeting rooms of the GOP on Capitol Hill: “George, look, you’re a great liar. You have a gift. If you can hone that skill, you, too, can become president just like one of our other boys. We’ll support you. You’ll be great! Listen, if they catch you in a fib, just tell another one to cover it. That’s how this system works. If you need to fabricate a story to get something done, just make stuff up. Let them fact-check you. It doesn’t matter. ‘Facts’ don’t matter anymore. Your people aren’t interested in boring ‘facts.’ You just have to give your base what they want. Lie as much as you want. We’ll always have your back. Only ‘sissies’ tell the truth now. In fact, let’s tell everyone that you’re Clark Kent. You look like him, after all. And then let’s say that you can become Superman anytime you want to save and protect your followers. They’ll believe you! Imagine yourself as President George Santos. You’ve got this, George!”
The way some people reach the very highest strata of political power is, shall we say, “interesting”—yet certainly fascinating and extremely troubling.

Aparentemente, el Sr. Santos ha mentido profundamente al pueblo estadounidense, sobre todo a aquellos que lo eligieron en base a sus supuestos puntos de vista y su historia, según lo que él les haya contado. La historia de su vida que proporcionó fue, al fin y al cabo, una completa invención.
Sin embargo, siendo la política que es, el Sr. Santos fue aceptado y bienvenido en la Cámara de mayoría republicana. Debido a la estrecha mayoría de los republicanos, se necesitaba desesperadamente el apoyo de Santos y, en particular, su voto para permitir que el congresista Kevin McCarthy se convirtiera en el director de la Cámara de Representantes.

Por otro lado, hasta el pasado reciente, nunca esperamos que incorregibles “embellecedores” (llamémoslos) de carrera se elevaran a los más altos niveles de poder en este país. De hecho, casi se empieza a sentir como si mentir—disculpe…embellecer—es un requisito previo para lograr la admisión a las esferas más enrarecidas de soberanía dentro de ciertas facciones del entorno político.
Solo puedo imaginar las conversaciones en las salas de reuniones ahora llenas de humo del Partido Republicano en Capitol Hill: “George, mira, eres un gran mentiroso. Tienes un don. Si puedes perfeccionar esa habilidad, tú también puedes convertirte en presidente como uno de nuestros otros muchachos. Te apoyaremos. ¡Serás genial! Escucha, si te atrapan en una mentira, solo miente de nuevo para cubrir la primera. Así es como funciona este sistema. Si necesitas inventar una historia para hacer algo, solo invéntate cosas. Deja que verifiquen lo que dices. No importa. Los ‘hechos’ ya no importan. Tu gente no está interesada en ‘hechos’ aburridos. Solo tienes que darle a tu base lo que quiere. Miente tanto como quieras. Siempre te respaldaremos. Solo los ‘cobardes’ dicen la verdad ahora. De hecho, digamos a todos que eres Clark Kent. Te pareces a él, después de todo. Y luego digamos que puedes convertirte en Superman en el momento que quieras para salvar y proteger a tus seguidores. ¡Te creerán! Imagínate como el presidente George Santos. ¡Sí se puede, George!”
La forma en que algunas personas alcanzan los estratos más altos del poder político es, digamos, “interesante”, pero siempre fascinante y extremadamente preocupante.
