It may seem to be “unfair,” but sometimes we see people who appear to catch a wave of good fortune, experiencing a magical moment in their lives that propels them toward sudden and totally unexpected fame or success (or, ideally, both). These lucky breaks, often appearing as seized opportunities or fortunate coincidences, can dramatically alter one’s path in life. While hard work and perseverance are essential, the element of luck can sometimes play an unexpectedly pivotal role in shaping destinies.
Take, for example, the case of Guillermo Rodriguez. In 2003, he was a recently arrived Mexican immigrant from Zacatecas. He was working in Hollywood as a parking lot security guard for the studio that featured the Jimmy Kimmel Live! show, a spectacle of political satire and entertainment. Jimmy Kimmel is the television host and comedian on this nightly program that is broadcast nationwide. Like so many other immigrants, Mr. Rodriguez was working more than one job as he struggled to make a living. In addition to the security guard gig, he was also working full time as a hotel room server and worked weekends at yet another job.
At the end of one of many exhausting days, he made the fortunate mistake of falling asleep in the car of Dicky Barrett, an announcer on Jimmy Kimmel’s show. Mr. Barrett was not at all amused when he found this immigrant worker sleeping in his car. He marched right over to complain to Jimmy.
Jimmy’s reaction could very well have been to tell Dicky Barrett, “Well, we can’t allow that sort of behavior with my employees, especially when they’re sleeping on the job. I’ll take care of it, Dicky. Don’t worry, I’ll fire him.”
Instead, Jimmy’s comedic, mischievous instincts kicked in. He said that this security guard had to appear on his show. That decision marked the beginning of a dramatically different life for Guillermo, the Mexicano who was working himself into the ground with minimum-wage jobs.
Guillermo experienced immediate success. His humility, affability, “cuddly” appearance, and easy, natural sense of humor made him a hit on the show. He is now known as Jimmy Kimmel’s “sidekick,” in the most endearing sense of the word.
I found a priceless YouTube video featuring Guillermo on Jimmy’s show about the time that Donald Trump was launching his presidential campaign in 2015. In the skit, Jimmy “apologized” to Guillermo for “being dragged into this.” Trump had recently trashed Mexican immigrant men as “rapists.” Jimmy asked Guillermo if he had any messages for Donald Trump. Guillermo said that he did.
Walking on stage with three mariachis playing in the background, Guillermo delivered his remarks directly to Trump. He spoke in Spanish, so subtitles were shown at the bottom of the screen.
To any of us who speak Spanish, it was immediately obvious that the subtitles were a sanitized “whitewash,” as it were, of the actual words that Guillermo was speaking in Spanish. To a typical American audience, the subtitles appeared to be a polished, gentle rebuke of Mr. Trump for delivering such a hateful message to the country. But Guillermo’s actual words were, in contrast, a classic mix of elegance and indelicate street Spanish that must have had any Spanish-speaking Mexican Americans in the audience rolling in the aisles.
Mr. Rodriguez is now a famous talk show personality. He is now, quite literally, a millionaire, all because he once fell asleep in a show announcer’s car.
This is obviously not the traditional “luck of the Irish.” No one can explain these kinds of “lucky breaks.” They just…happen—most often when we least expect them. All we can do is try to be ready for them if we’re ever blessed with the “luck of Guillermo.”

Golpe de Suerte Para un Mexicoamericano

Puede parecer “injusto”, pero a veces vemos a personas que parecen captar una ola de buena suerte, experimentando un momento mágico en sus vidas que las impulsa hacia una fama o un éxito repentinos e inesperados (o, idealmente, ambos). Estos golpes de suerte, que a menudo aparecen como oportunidades aprovechadas o coincidencias afortunadas, pueden alterar dramáticamente el camino de una persona en la vida. Si bien el trabajo duro y la perseverancia son esenciales, el elemento de la suerte a veces puede desempeñar un papel inesperadamente crucial en la formación de los destinos.
Tomemos, por ejemplo, el caso de Guillermo Rodríguez. En 2003, era un inmigrante mexicano recién llegado de Zacatecas. Además de su trabajo como guardia de seguridad, también trabajaba a tiempo completo como camarero de habitaciones en un hotel y los fines de semana tenía otro empleo más.
Al final de uno de sus muchos días agotadores, cometió el afortunado error de quedarse dormido en el coche de Dicky Barrett, un locutor del programa de Jimmy Kimmel. Al señor Barrett no le hizo ninguna gracia encontrar a este trabajador inmigrante durmiendo en su coche. Fue directamente a quejarse con Jimmy.
La reacción de Jimmy bien podría haber sido decirle a Dicky Barrett: “Bueno, no podemos permitir ese tipo de comportamiento con mis empleados, especialmente cuando duermen en el trabajo. Yo me encargaré de eso, Dicky. No te preocupes, lo despediré”.
En cambio, los instintos cómicos y traviesos de Jimmy entraron en acción. Dijo que este guardia de seguridad tenía que aparecer en su programa. Esa decisión marcó el comienzo de una vida radicalmente diferente para Guillermo, el mexicano que se estaba hundiendo en trabajos con salario mínimo.
Guillermo experimentó un éxito inmediato. Su humildad, afabilidad, apariencia “tierna” y sentido del humor natural y sencillo lo convirtieron en un éxito en el programa. Ahora se lo conoce como el “secuaz” de Jimmy Kimmel, en el sentido más entrañable de la palabra.
Encontré un video de YouTube invaluable que presenta a Guillermo en el programa de Jimmy sobre la época en que Donald Trump estaba lanzando su campaña presidencial en 2015. En la sátira, Jimmy “se disculpó” con Guillermo por “haberlo arrastrado en medio de todo esto”. Trump había criticado recientemente a los inmigrantes mexicanos como “violadores”. Jimmy le preguntó a Guillermo si tenía algún mensaje para Donald Trump. Guillermo dijo que sí.
Al subir al escenario con tres mariachis tocando de fondo, Guillermo le dirigió sus comentarios directamente a Trump. Habló en español, por lo que se mostraron subtítulos en la parte inferior de la pantalla.

Pero las palabras de Guillermo eran, en contraste, una mezcla clásica de elegancia y español callejero poco delicado que debe haber hecho reír a carcajadas a cualquier mexicano-estadounidense hispanohablante que estuviera en el auditorio.
El señor Rodríguez es ahora una famosa personalidad de un programa de entrevistas. Ahora es, literalmente, millonario, todo porque una vez se quedó dormido en el auto de un locutor de un programa.
