For me, keeping abreast of the news is a lifelong habit. For some reason, I tend to think that everyone keeps up with the news at least as much as I do. But then not everyone is as obsessed with the news as I am! And there are others who are far more diligent than I am about analyzing the affairs of the world.
I often talk with people I know about something in the news on the national, state, or local level. I mistakenly assume that “everyone” knows what I’m talking about, but I’m often faced with a blank stare. They may be interested but not aware of the circumstances that make something newsworthy. They may be embarrassed that they don’t know what I’m referring to. Or they flat-out may not care.
And then again, sometimes I’m the one with the blank stare.
Keeping up with the news, and understanding it, requires time, focus, and discipline. Many Americans are simply too exhausted after expending their energy on the day’s demands to strap themselves down and study current affairs.
On the other hand, too many other Americans rely on biased, skewed, and highly unreliable news sources. Too many of us turn to Facebook, Twitter, and myriad other platforms. These faux news channels hardly hold themselves to high standards—or any standards, for that matter—of journalistic excellence. It’s vitally important that we gravitate toward news sources that do not lean heavily right or left. We need news that is truthful, unbiased, and as objective as possible.
Having a nation of properly informed voters is vital to our democracy and our health. We see the effects on our country as its Constitution is continuously challenged by those with a malicious agenda. Those who seek to impose their world view at any cost are adept at manipulating the thoughts of the massively misinformed with lies, deception, and hyperbole. We have all seen the threats, hysteria, and violence that result from displaced anger. The rage that ensues serves only to divide us further and leads us to hate one another. As a result, we ourselves demolish what could have been a “more perfect union.”
Next week, I’ll write about the steps we can take to become adequately informed about the world around us, even if we live in a world of unrelenting demands on our time and sanity.

La Importancia de Ser Informado

Para mí, estar al tanto de las noticias es un hábito de toda la vida. Por alguna razón, tiendo a pensar que todos están al tanto de las noticias al menos tanto como yo. ¡Pero no todo el mundo está tan obsesionado con las noticias como yo! Y hay otros que son mucho más diligentes que yo en analizar los asuntos del mundo.
A menudo hablo con personas que conozco sobre algo en las noticias a nivel nacional, estatal o local. Asumo erróneamente que “todos” saben de lo que estoy hablando, pero frecuentemente me enfrento con una mirada ausente. Puede que estén interesados, pero no conscientes de las circunstancias que hacen que algo sea de interés periodístico. Pueden sentirse avergonzados de no saber a qué me refiero. O puede que no les importe.
Y luego a veces soy yo el que tiene la mirada ausente.
Mantenerse al día con las noticias y comprenderlas requiere tiempo, concentración y disciplina. Muchos estadounidenses simplemente están demasiado agotados después de gastar su energía en las exigencias del día para sentarse y estudiar fijadamente la actualidad.
Por otro lado, muchos otros estadounidenses dependen de fuentes de noticias sesgadas y poco confiables. Demasiados entre nosotros recurrimos a Facebook, Twitter e innumerables otras plataformas. Estos canales de noticias falsas, todos los cuales difícilmente mantienen un alto nivel de calidad —o cualquier nivel de calidad, para el caso— de excelencia periodística. Es de vital importancia que gravitemos hacia fuentes de noticias que no se inclinen demasiado hacia la derecha o la izquierda. Necesitamos noticias veraces, imparciales y lo más objetivas posible.
Tener una nación de votantes debidamente informados es vital para nuestra democracia y nuestra salud. Vemos los efectos en nuestro país ya que su Constitución es continuamente desafiada por aquellos con una agenda maliciosa. Aquellos que buscan imponer su visión del mundo a cualquier precio son expertos en manipular los pensamientos de los desinformados masivamente con mentiras, engaños, e hipérbole. Todos hemos visto las amenazas, la histeria, y la violencia que resultan de la ira desplazada. La rabia que sobreviene solo sirve para dividirnos más y nos lleva a odiarnos unos a otros. Como resultado, nosotros mismos destruimos lo que podría haber sido una “unión más perfecta”.
La semana que viene, escribiré sobre los pasos que podemos tomar para estar adecuadamente informados sobre el mundo que nos rodea, aunque vivimos en un mundo de demandas implacables sobre nuestro tiempo y cordura.
