VENTURAMuseum of Ventura County to present “La Voz de la Colonia, 1926-1932 -The Mexican Community’s News Source from 1926-1932” by Dr. Jose Alamillo from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 22 at 100 E. Main St., Ventura, in the museum’s pavilion.

The cost is $7 per session, free from MVC members.

A newly discovered Spanish language newspaper reveals new information about important events and issues in Ventura County’s history. Dr. José M. Alamillo is Professor and Coordinator of the Chicana/o Studies Program at California State University, Channel Islands. His research focuses on Mexican immigrants and Mexican Americans use of culture, sports, space and leisure to build community solidarity and to advance politically and economically in the United States.

His first book was Making Lemonade out of Lemons:  Mexican American Labor and Leisure in a California Town. He co-authored Latinos in U.S Sport: A History of Isolation, Cultural Identity, and Acceptance, the first textbook to deal comprehensively with Latinos and Latinas in U.S. sports. He’s currently writing a book on the transnational and spatial politics of Mexican American sports in the 20th century.
