More volunteers, sponsors needed for March 17 event

VENTURA — A group of at least 30 Ventura residents will gather together at Ventura’s Sacred Heart church on Sunday, March 17 to shave their heads and show their support for children afflicted with childhood cancer, Ventura County Public Health reported this week in a media release.

Led by Benjamin Martinez, office manager with Ventura County Public Health’s Women, Infant and Children (WIC) program, the group will participate in the St. Baldrick’s Foundation’s annual head?shaving event designed to raise awareness of and funding for childhood cancer research.

This is the 6th year Martinez has supported St. Baldrick’s and his second as a team leader. Last year, his team raised nearly $11,000.

“I come from a large, close?knit family,” Martinez stated in the release. “I am especially thankful for the good health of each of my 15 nieces and nephews. When I was asked for the 1st time to participate with St. Baldricks, I knew this was opportunity to show just that. ”

Martinez’s team is looking for more members, financial donations and cheerleaders to visit Sacred Heart church at 10 a.m. March 17 and support them while they have their heads shaved.
