Annual event brings students and community together to learn about the role Public Works plays in keeping community safe
VENTURA COUNTY — More than 1,200 Ventura County students are expected to attend Ventura County Public Works Agency’s (VCPWA) annual National Public Works Day event on May 21, 2024, at the Ventura County Government Center.
VCPWA invites K-12 students throughout the county to immerse themselves in the world of public works, getting up close and personal with VCPWA staff and equipment. Arriving in staggered groups throughout the day, each class will be paired with VCPWA tour guides, who will lead the groups through the many agency booths and heavy equipment setups that will take over and transform the “G” and part of “F” parking lots for the day.
Before sunrise on May 21, VPCWA crews will begin setting up equipment and truck displays as well as the various booths that each department has spent months putting together to provide interactive demonstrations focused on science, technological innovations, illustrations of current engineering projects, career opportunities and more.
“This year’s Public Works Week theme, “Advancing the Quality of Life for All,” is beyond fitting when we consider the multitude of services Public Works provides daily to our county,” said David Sasek, interim director of the agency. “Many of our community members may only see us in times of disaster or recovery response, but so much of the preventative work we do day in and day out isn’t visible. Public Works Day is a great opportunity for us to connect with the community, especially our younger generation, to inspire them and to share the wide range of important work our operations and maintenance teams do every day.”
VCPWA provides water, sanitation, vertical construction, survey, grading, roads, transportation systems, controlling and conserving storm waters, and working as first responders for major events.
Members of the public, as well as homeschooling parents, are invited to attend from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Government Center in Ventura on May 21.
