Ventura County Animal Services: Protect Your Pets — or adopt one — this 4th of July

VENTURA COUNTY — The 4th of July week is the busiest time of year at Ventura County Animal Services, the agency reported this week in a media release. Fireworks scare dogs and they often run away from home and end up at the shelter. Since Saturday, June 30, Animal Services has added 57 new dogs to the kennels:  41 strays and 16 owner- surrenders.

For anyone thinking about adding a new dog to your family, you’re encouraged to head down to the shelter today and adopt a new pet. We are currently housing 22 birds, 115 cats, 198 dogs, 1 horse, 3 snakes, 5 guinea pigs, 10 hamsters and 51 rabbits. That’s 405 pets at this writing, the agency reported.

Adoptions are $125 for cats and dogs. This fee includes spay/neuter surgery, microchip implant, Ventura County license, free health exam and free obedience training for dogs. There is also a 14-day return policy. Vaccines given are: rabies, DAPPL2 and bordatella for dogs, and the HCPCH for cats. Bunnies are $50 for an altered rabbit, $20 for an unaltered rabbit with a voucher for spay/neuter. Shelters are short-staffed and the public is encouraged to come down and visit rather than call.
