VCCDC Community Matters Newsletter – June 2021

HARD WORK PAID OFF
Pictured here are the children of Abel and Beatriz outside their new home. Abel and Bea are the latest family to find their dream home through VCCDC!
Their journey with us began in 2014 when they started working with our Homeownership Specialists and went on to purchase a home in Oxnard in 2015. However, with seven children, Abel and Bea were growing out of their 3 bedroom Oxnard home fast. They continued to participate in education classes and credit coaching over the years and more recently worked with us to get their credit score high enough to purchase a bigger home for their growing family. Last month, with some down payment assistance, they closed on their 5 bedroom home in Fillmore and moved the family in. The children can’t believe all the new space they have to run around!
“I tell everyone to go to VCCDC,” says Abel, “My coworkers, my buddies, everyone, and I just ask, “do you want a house or not?!” because I know they are in the same place we were and need to just believe it CAN happen.”
We’ll leave you from some words of encouragement from Bea. “If you are dreaming of homeownership, place your trust in the VCCDC team and let them help you. Through this whole process, we were confident that as a nonprofit organization, everyone from VCCDC only had our family’s best interest in mind.”
Do you know someone who is dreaming of homeownership for their family? Don’t let them pass up this opportunity! Send them the link below to get started.
Here’s who you’d be connecting with to start your journey toward homeownership.
Meet Gaby and Francine, our Homeownership Specialists! This dynamic duo run our coaching program at VCCDC and will be the people you interact with as you set personal financial and homeownership goals. Together, you will cover aspects such as improving credit, reducing debt, increasing savings and customized budgeting through one-on-one coaching and group education. They complete continuing education programs each year to maintain relevant certifications and stay up to date on industry regulations so that you can be confident you are getting the very best advice.
RAPID RESPONSE RELIEF AWARD
VCCDC has been awarded $330,000 through the CDFI Rapid Response Fund this week. CDFI RRP awards reach a wide variety of low-income communities across the United States impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“In serving places that the financial sector historically hasn’t served well, CDFIs lift our whole economy up. We know that for every dollar injected into a CDFI, it catalyzes eight more dollars in private-sector investment, meaning that today’s announcement might lead to an additional $10 billion in investment,” said Secretary Janet Yellen. “The President and the Vice President ran on a very ambitious agenda – ‘Build Back Better,’ unwinding systemic racism, creating an economy that works for everyone. I believe this is what that looks like in practice. By channeling more capital into CDFIs, we are translating those ideals into reality.”
The CDFI RRP grant funds will be used to support our financial products and services at VCCDC. The CDFI Fund designed the program to disburse the funds rapidly in light of the nationwide economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“For millions of Americans, homeownership is the cornerstone of a life with security, with dignity, and with hope. A home is more than four walls and a roof; it is a place where we can celebrate triumphs and weather the trials of life. A place where we can watch our families grow and prosper. A place that helps us build wealth we can pass down to our children and our grandchildren…” President Joseph R. Biden Jr.
Every June, we recognize National Homeownership Month as a way to celebrate the many ways buying and owning a home is a solid step forward for American families.
Here at VCCDC, we believe that a home is more than a place to live. It is the cornerstone of any individual and family’s economic, environmental and social well being.

20TH ANNIVERSARY FEATURE
We are so proud to be marking our 20th year of transforming lives through homeownership. Many people and organizations have worked tirelessly over the years to build the VCCDC we know today. We will be featuring some of our key supporters to celebrate their contribution to VCCDC!
Mike McGuire
Honoring our first Board Chair, Michael McGuire, a man of great compassion for those in need and who has left a special space in the community and hearts of many that will long be felt. Please see below for a highlight from his eulogy.
“Beyond the fact and figures of his expertise, was the real Mike. At the core of his all too brief life were impeccable integrity and compassion for those in need. From afar he might seem stoic and studious, yet when engaged in conversation, he’d reveal a thoughtful, caring man, with a brilliant mind. He believed in others. His goal was always to encourage employees, friends, and family to realize their talents and full potential. He’d know your name, look you in the eye when he shook your hand or gave you a bear hug. He never faltered for words, except when his heart was filled with emotion, and his soft blue eyes would reveal a profound tenderness.”
