More National Success for CERF
The Center for Economic Research and Forecasting (CERF) has been very busy over the last few months. Executive Director Matthew Fienup presented his and Dan Hamilton’s latest work on the economic contributions of the Latino cohort in many different cities across the United States, including Miami, Chicago, California Inland Empire, Dallas, Newark, New York City, and Los Angeles. This recent work at CERF builds directly on previous years’ U.S. Latino GDP Reports and last year’s eight separate State Latino GDP Reports. One of the latest presentations was at L’Attitude, the largest event of its kind for the LatinX community in the U.S., where they presented the 2022 U.S. Latino GDP Report.
Welcoming the New Program Director for Sports Management
Welcome to Mark Orlando, the new Program Director for Sports Managementand full-time faculty member. This major is now one of the most popular in the undergrad program! Previously, Mark served as Interim Program Director for the Hospitality and Tourism Management program and as an adjunct professor at the School of Management. As a Cal Lutheran alumnus, Mark always wanted to return to the university community that had established his academic career. Mark earned his Ed.D. from Pepperdine University; he was previously a lecturer for the sports management program at UC Santa Barbara and facilitated workshops and courses at MiraCosta College’s Emerging Leaders Institute and UCSB’s Professional and Continuing Education. His research on hiring criteria in big-market sports professions has inspired Mark to create his own company that educates aspiring and progressive sport professionals.

Summer at Hub101 and Program Manager Kristin Bell Honored
Hub101 was very busy this summer. In June, they held Demo Day, showcasing the startups in our current IdeaToDo program, a program that assists very early-stage founders in developing their startup ideas. The startups presenting from the most recent IdeaToDo program that participated were Splitcoin (an offline, self-custody solution for crypto users), Dutch (a social connection platform focused on removing implicit bias), GLUKI (gamified edtech for children with Type 1 Diabetes), Frendii (wellness and social platform for women over 50), and Zavvaly (a smart, safety ring consumer product). In July, they kicked off the 2022 Business Barn Raising program, a 7-week program for the purpose of providing a forum for our community to collaborate to solve business challenges, launch entrepreneurial ventures, and gain practical experience. Then they held a Startup Bootcamp for High School Students. A small group of students from Westlake high school went through an intensive program in new venture creation and presented their ideas in front of an audience. It is not surprising the Hub101 Program Manager, Kristin Bell, was honored as one of the 40 under 40 by the Pacific Coast Times!
Undergraduate Students Study Entrepreneurship in Portugal
During the summer, three School of Management students were selected to attend the European Innovation Academy (EIA)Andrea Villaseñor, Brissa Castaneda, and Nick Acosta. An entrepreneurial study abroad program that provides “participants with the resources, connections, and mentoring necessary to build a successful startup in 10 or 15 days.” This program is recognized globally and has developed joint partnerships with Standford University, U.C. Berkeley, and Google. The EIA trip was funded by a gift from the NewCo Foundation, a non-profit formed by CLU alumna Dawn Gross and Dave Gross that promotes student entrepreneurship. Going forward, EIA trips will be one of the awards given at the New Venture Fair.
Hub101 Coming to a Screen Near You with Alumnus Matthew Weisman
CBS Sports recently interviewed alumnus Matthew Weisman at Hub101! President of tech company LetzChat spent its early days at HUB101, and now the NFL uses it to support the growing popularity of American Football around the globe. It has developed a unique technology for live translations between more than 100 languages for live TV, SMS and chat platforms, phone calls, video subtitling, web communication, and more. We are proud to share another excellent startup story emerging from Hub101, the Steve Dorfman Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and the School of Management! A copy of the CBS story can be found here.
