Launching a New Center for Cal Lutheran Entrepreneurs | We celebrated the most significant event of the Fall for the School of Management – the official dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony for our Steven Dorfman Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. More than 120 guests participated in person or via livestream and were inspired by keynote addresses by President Varlotta, Mr. Steve Dorfman, Professor of Practice in Entrepreneurship Mike Panesis, and our special guest Laura Lucas Moreno, who is also a member of the Center’s advisory council. Thanks to the generosity of Mr. Dorfman, we will be able to award two generous scholarships each year (the first two recipients, Elsa Klubberud and Elaine Vo were in attendance), we have created an endowed professor position, we’ll fund activities at Hub101, and we will soon be launching a grant program for early stage startup companies. The event was also attended by many past Hub101 members and School of Management alumni-entrepreneurs, and was supported by the Greater Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce, represented by Heather Macaulay. More about the event here and on YouTube. |

Proud of our contribution to the 2021 U.S. Latino GDP Report | Once again, the Center for Economic Research and Forecasting (CERF) is making us proud. After months of incredibly intense work, Matthew Fienup (Executive Director) and Dan Hamilton (Director of Economics) have recently published not only eight different State Level Latino GDP reports as part of contract work for Bank of America, but also the 2021 U.S. Latino GDP Report. The 2021 report confirmed the immense contributions the LatinX cohort makes to the U.S. economy. If Latinos living in the US were an independent country, their GDP would represent the 7th largest economy in the world, ahead of countries such as Italy, Brazil or South Korea, in annual growth surpassed only by China and India in the decade after 2010. The results of their important work were presented at L’Attitude, the largest event of its kind for the LatinX community in the USA. The work has been cited in dozens of media reports (links here). |

Our biennial PRME Report has been published | Five years ago the School of Management became a signatory to the Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME), the largest organized relationship between the United Nations and business schools worldwide. PRME engages business and management schools to ensure they provide future leaders with the skills needed to balance economic and sustainability goals, while drawing attention to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and aligning academic institutions with the work of the UN Global Compact. Since becoming a member, we have made significant advances in support of PRME’s mission via a number of activities and initiatives, including our annual PRiME Competition and also through research, scholarship and teaching. Biennially, we are required to provide a report on our activities and how we live up to PRME’s principles. We recently published our latest report, under the direction of our PRiME leads, Valeria Makarova and Susan Wood, which is available for download from our PRiME website. |

Continuing our work on diversity education | We held our Fall “Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) in the Workplace” event for our students. The focus of the event, in honor of National Hispanic American Heritage Month, was on “Impact and Opportunities in the LatinX Business Community” and featured a number of our LatinX alumni and students – the panel (from left to right) consisted of alumnus Mark Garcia (MBA ’18, CFO of Freska Produce), Diana Rodriguez (MSIT ’16, Program Manager at Google), Rafael Cordero (MSIT ’23), and Don Padilla(MBA-FP ’22, CEO of MVP Sports and Entertainment Management), masterfully moderated by our own faculty member, John Garcia. Our panelists shared their stories and insights and engaged in an inspiring discussion of questions from a hybrid audience of attendees. This is one of the initiatives the School of Management DEI Steering Committee under the leadership of our colleague Mary Jo Shane is working on. Watch on YouTube. |
