Research in California’s Northern Channel Islands provides strong evidence of the benefit of marine protected areas for the recreational scuba diving industry in Southern California and highlights that the diving community should be considered a key stakeholder in decision-making about the future of MPAs.
The awards will allow the assistant professors — who show capacity for great distinction in their research — to take risks and gather data to complete research that will take their academic careers to the next level.
“Launched in the wake of the killing of George Floyd, this program brings to campus students who continue their passionate commitments to racial justice in the form of teaching, research and mentoring,” said Leila J. Rupp, Interim Anne and Michael Towbes Graduate Dean.
Scott Marcus directs the ensemble, presenting songs by renowned divas Googosh (Persian) and Roza Eskenazi (Greek) as well as a set of Armenian songs, with special guest dancers Devilla and Aubre Hill.
A free screening of Michael Love’s film about the restoration of a former Goleta golf course back into a wetland, presented by the Cheadle Center for Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration and the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum.
Filmmaker Valerio Ciriaci and producer/cinematographer Isaak Liptzin join moderator Stephanie Malia Hom for a post-screening discussion of their 2022 documentary.
