In 2021-2022, A&L continues its CREATING HOPE programming initiative which commenced in spring 2021 with a deep commitment to offer programs that bring hope to our campus and community.
“The Wait Is Over. Fueled with hope, we give you Arts & Lectures’ 2021-2022 season of performances, lectures and special events,” said A&L’s Miller McCune Executive Director Celesta M. Billeci. “When we launched our CREATING HOPE programming initiative in spring 2021, we stepped forward with programs to bring hope to our campus and community. And we remain deeply committed to this endeavor, as you’ll see reflected in the events throughout the season. We’re conscious that things are rapidly changing and our wish is to accommodate as much of our community as possible. An at-home live stream option will be available for many events this season for those of you who cannot attend in person.”
A&L will continue to offer a wide range of phenomenal cultural and artistic experiences in 2021-2022 – from fascinating talks by today’s thought leaders to command performances by some of the world’s premier dance companies, musicians and performers – at venues from UCSB to downtown Santa Barbara and beyond. Additional events, including performances, films and public lectures, will be announced throughout the season. In this series public figures, organizers, thinkers and doers expose deeply embedded injustices and call for a more equitable future. Justice for All offerings are FREE for UCSB students.
Julia?n Castro, former U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and presidential candidate presents Waking Up From My American Dream (Sun, Oct 10). Warrior Women: film screening and conversation chronicles the lifelong work of Madonna Thunder Hawk – a leader in the American Indian Movement – and Marcella Gilbert, a Lakota mother and daughter whose fight for Indigenous rights began in the late 1960s and continues to this day (Wed, Nov. 3). Annette Gordon-Reed, Harvard professor and Pulitzer Prize-winning historian will speak On Juneteenth: ‘Freedom Day’ and Its Importance to American History (Fri, Nov. 10). Cathy Park Hong, award-winning poet and cultural critic (Mon, Nov. 15) will discuss her memoir, Minor Feelings: An Asian American Reckoning, which integrates personal stories, historical context and cultural criticism into a radically honest meditation on the Asian-American experience. Amanda Nguyen, a groundbreaking activist/founder/CEO of Rise, an author of the Sexual Assault Survivor’s Bill of Rights and recognized by Forbes’ 30 under 30, presents “Hopeanomics” and How Social Entrepreneurs are Transforming Grassroots Activism (Wed, Jan. 12). Andrea Elliott, award-winning New York Times investigative journalist (Thurs., Jan 20) puts a human face to topics ranging from child poverty to Muslim life in the U.S in Invisible Child: Poverty, Survival and Hope in an American City. An Evening with John Leguizamo features this Tony Award and Emmy-winning Broadway star’s (Wed, Feb. 2) irresistibly irreverent brand of comedy inspired by his life story. Roxane Gay, author and social commentator presents Roxane with One N, a brilliant critique of the ebb and flow of modern culture (Fri, Feb. 25).Everything Rises: Jennifer Koh and Davo?ne Tines, is aWorld Premiere multimedia collaboration born from the artists’ desire to understand themselves as the descendants of refugees and slaves and reveal a universal history shared by immigrants and minority Americans. Grammy-winning pianist and composer Arturo O’Farrilll leads the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra in Fandango at the Wall with the Villalobos Brothers (Fri., Oct. 15). The Speaking with Pico series returns with the MacArthur “Genius” founder of Street Symphony – an L.A.-based nonprofit that brings music to homeless and incarcerated communities – and co-founder of the Skid Row Arts Alliance, Vjiay Gupta. This season, the Chamber Arts series includes the Danish String Quartet who will introduce Doppelgänger, an ambitious four-year project supported by Arts & Lectures and a variety of international partners. The project pairs world premieres from four renowned composers with chamber music masterpieces by Schubert, including “Death and the Maiden” and the “Rosamunde” quartet. On each program, the quartet will perform a premiere with its doppelgänger – the Schubert quartet or quintet that inspired it. Part 1 features Schubert: String Quartet in G major, D. 887; Bent Sørensen: Doppelgänger; Schubert (arr. Danish String Quartet): Der Doppelgänger (Thu., Oct. 14 / 7 p.m. / Rockwood).
