OXNARD — Tickets are still available for the Mixteco/Indigena Community Organizing Project (MICOP) annual “Night in Oaxaca — Education is Liberation” program which begins with registration at 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3 at the Oxnard Performing Arts Center, 800 Hobson Way, Oxnard.
“We would be honored to have you join us for our 3rd annual ‘Night in Oaxaca’ event,” the organization reported in a media release. “This year we will celebrate the educational dreams and achievements of Ventura County’s indigenous immigrant community. Our evening program will feature students from the Rio School District’s after school program dancing traditional Oaxacan dances, which they learn through MICOP’s Mixtec Culture and Language Education program.
“We will award the first Tequio Scholarships to five indigenous college students, funded primarily through your contributions at Night in Oaxaca 2012. We will also give recognition to MICOP’s adult literacy students who attend our night school program to learn to speak and write in Spanish. Come be inspired by the dedication of these students who study each night after long days in the fields.
“Finally, we will collect backpacks for our August Backpack Drive. Bring a backpack or school supplies to Night in Oaxaca and receive a ‘¡No Me Llames Oaxaquita!’ wristband! (Don’t call me Little Oaxacan!)
“We can’t wait to share a mole dinner with you as we honor educational advances in our community.”
Individual tickets are $40 per ticket, $75 per couple.
