We have had a busy month! Here are some highlights:
- Go to our updated website and you can read all the latest about our very first Social Justice Fund Fellow, Maria Rodriquez and her project, Why Do Immigrants Get Shortchanged?: The Case for Increased Legal Services in Migrant Communities in Ventura County.
- In addition, the Pacific Coast Business Timesran an article highlighting Maria’s work as a Social Justice Fellow documenting the challenges faced by immigrants seeking legal advice. (Unfortunately, a subscription is necessary to read the article.)
- The SJFVC named two new board members and we are excited to introduce them. They will expand our skill set and diversify our board.
- (1) Dr Kim Marra Stephenson, is a teacher, former Principal of Camarillo High School, Ventura County Woman of the Year, Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson, 19th District (2016) and active as an organizer and speaker on issues of social justice, and founder of VC Women’s Forum Collaborative.
- (2) John Graham, Sr. Manager Global Employer Brand & Recruitment Marketing at Amgen, has worked to improve outcomes for black and diverse talent in corporate spaces. He also has extensive experience mentoring and coaching of young professionals from HBCU’s and within companies. John is also Board Chair for the Talent Acquisition Marketing Board.
- The SJFVC was shortlisted by a foundation for a sizable grant. This is part of our efforts to raise $50K this year. We have had great success – and fun – in our Zoom calls this summer. If you would like to share your passion and hold a zoom for the SJFVC with your friends, please contact me. We want to expand our village around our fellow to give them the support they need to succeed.
- One easy way to contribute to the Social Justice Fund through your online shopping is through Amazon Smile. Select Social Justice Fund of Ventura County as your preferred charity at check-out and Amazon will donate 0.5% of eligible purchases to the Social Justice Fund.
