Social-distancing drive-thru ceremony celebrating Santa Maria High School to be held May 1

SANTA MARIA — A social-distancing drive-thru ceremony celebrating Santa Maria High School seniors heading to universities is scheduled for Friday, May 1.

School administrators, in masks and gloves, will be waiting in the staff parking lot off Thornburg Street to honor each Saint for his or her academic dedication.

About 150 students will all receive a medal from the University of California (UC) system, a Presidential certificate and an assortment of school supplies.

“The counseling team and faculty feel that it is important to recognize these students that have taken rigorous courses and have made many sacrifices to achieve the privilege of a university acceptance,’’ said assistant principal Monica Pallan. “This event will hopefully show the students how proud and how special they are. Administrators, counselors and teachers will be present to show their love for these students.’’
