The Southern California Gas Co. presented a $20,000 grant to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme on April 12 as part of a 2011 Education Initiative, the organization reported in a media release.
The presentation, scheduled at the Harriet H. Samuelson Clubhouse on 7th St. in Oxnard, was made at the beginning of the club’s annual Career Fair, where professionals in various industries share the steps needed to be successful in their chosen fields.
BGCOP will use the grant to support College Bound, an educational enhancement program intended to guide students through the process of reaching high school graduation and attending college.
The College Bound program is available for low-income, first generation students, ages 13-18 years, who are interested in pursuing a college degree. Participants are case-managed and advised on earning their high school diplomas and being accepted into college; encouraging them through the academic, financial and testing requirements of their chosen school. Emphasis is placed on understanding and obtaining financial aid, grants and scholarships, and includes workshops specifically designed for parents.
