OXNARD — The Alzheimer’s Association’s annual Oxnard Walk to End Alzheimer’s event will look a little different this year. The event will be held on Sept. 26, 2020, but instead of a large gathering, the Alzheimer’s Association is encouraging participants to walk as individuals or in small groups on sidewalks, tracks and trails across their local communities. To add to the festivities, The Collection at RiverPark, which hosted the walk in previous years, is offering a view-only Promise Garden for participants.

At 9 a.m. on the day of the event, the Alzheimer’s Association will kick things off with a virtual Opening and Promise Garden Ceremony, which will be live-streamed on the Walk to End Alzheimer’s app. The Opening Ceremony will feature presentations from local speakers, and the Promise Garden Ceremony will honor the personal reasons participants join together to fight Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia.

After the ceremonies, participants are encouraged to complete the walk anywhere they choose. When they are finished walking, participants are invited to safely experience the view-only Promise Garden at The Collection near the Splash Pad on Town Center Drive any time before 4 p.m.

“We are so excited to continue our partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association this year,” said The Collection’s Marketing Coordinator Juliana Finberg. “This is such an important cause, and we are grateful to be able to help create an engaging way for our community’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s to continue safely.”

To enhance the participant experience leading up to the event and on Walk day, new features are being added to the Walk to End Alzheimer’s mobile app to create an opportunity for the community to connect. Participants can use the app and new “Walk Mainstage” to track their steps and distance, follow a virtual Walk path, manage their Facebook fundraisers, and access information and resources from the Association and Walk sponsors to help individuals and families affected by the disease. A new audio track is available to encourage participants along the way and to congratulate them upon completion of their Walk.

More than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease — the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States. Additionally, more than 16 million family members and friends provide care to people living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias.
