SANTA BARBARA — On Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2018, Americans will celebrate National Voter Registration Day with a massive 50-state effort to register voters before Election Day this November. The Housing Authority of the City of Santa Barbara (HACSB) is teaming up with the League of Women Voters of Santa Barbara to ensure its residents and the community are ready for the Nov. 6 election.
The drive will be 4-6 p.m. Tuesday Sept. 25 at the Presidio Springs Apartments Community Room, 721 Laguna Street, in Santa Barbara. League of Women Voters and HACSB representatives will be on hand to assist voters who want to register or update their registration if they have moved or changed names.
“Many of our residents work full-time or more, are raising families and have limited means of transportation, which could all make it easy to miss important deadlines like this,” said Rob Fredericks, Housing Authority of the City of Santa Barbara President & CEO. “We don’t want anything to get in the way of their voices being heard.”
A recent Pew Research Center survey concluded that low-income citizens are more likely not to vote for a variety of reasons. Additionally, millions of Americans miss the opportunity to vote because they don’t know how to register, or they miss state registration deadlines.
“While getting registered can seem intimidating, it’s really a simple process,” said Susan Horne, Voter Service Chair of the League of Women Voters of Santa Barbara. “Whether you’ve never voted before or aren’t sure if your information is out of date, this is the chance to be sure you’re ready to cast a ballot in the Nov. 6 general election.”
In California, the voter registration deadline for the Nov. 6 general election is Oct. 22. Voters will elect the governor, secretary of state, attorney general, 20 even-numbered State Senate district members, 80 State Assembly members, 53 members to the United States House of Representatives and one member to the United States Senate, among other elected officials.
Now in its seventh year, National Voter Registration Day?has been a game-changing annual nonpartisan campaign to register hundreds of thousands of voters in communities and online.
