The scars of racist and sexist schooling are deep and so are legacies of struggle. Through poetry, stories, and students’ testimonials, this talk considers the impacts of academic profiling and shares critically hopeful approaches to education.

An award-winning author and teacher, Gilda L. Ochoa is Professor of Chicana/o-Latina/o Studies at Pomona College. Her latest book — Academic Profiling: Latinos, Asian Americans, and the Achievement Gap received three national awards for its focus on eradicating racism. It was also named as one of 35 books that all educators of African American and Latino students must read. Ochoa’s earlier books include Becoming Neighbors in a Mexican American Community, Learning from Latino Teachers, and Latina/o Los Angeles. Ochoa is a frequent speaker at colleges, conferences, and school districts. She has also received teaching awards from Pomona College and UCLA, and she was named the 2016 Susan Currier Visiting Professor for Teaching Excellence at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.

A product of public schools, Ochoa was born and raised in Los Angeles County to first-generation college students from Nicaragua and New York. She received her B.A. from UC Irvine and her Ph.D. from UCLA.
