“I’m a Santa Paula boy,” says George Lockwood. Lockwood was born in Santa Paula in 1960 and he still remembers the art lessons he received at Isbell Middle School and Santa Paula High School. While earning his Agricultural Business Management Degree at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, he spent the summer months packing mules in Yosemite National Park. After college, his experience with livestock and the outdoors took Lockwood to Alaska where he obtained his guide license.

For 19 years, George guided clients to some of the most remote and beautiful corners of Alaska. In his free time, Lockwood would sketch the wildlife that he observed on his tours. It was only after a client asked to purchase his small sketchbook of drawings that George considered a career as an artist. Lockwood retired from the guide business in 2003 and has been a full-time painter ever since. He has won numerous awards and gained national recognition for his work, including 20 state duck and game bird stamps; Nation’s Best Duck Stamp Design twice; Foundation for North American Wild Sheep Artist of the Year; and the Award of Excellence from the Society of Animal Artists National Tour. Birds and other wildlife remain his favorite subjects to paint.
