Recent Acquisition: “Mission” Style Baskets
Attributed to Southern California Native peoples. Donated to the Santa Paula Art Museum’s permanent collection by The Bennett R. Curtis Family.
Native American baskets from the Southern California region are often referred to as “mission” baskets. The generic “mission” term was commonly used in the late 19th through mid-20th century to reference a style of baskets made by native peoples living under the Franciscan mission system, c. 1769 – 1834. (Mission Basilica San Buenaventura was founded in 1782.) Basketry by Southern California Tribes existed prior to and after the mission system, and represent some of the earliest art making in this region. The primary weft material used in these baskets is Juncus, which grows in inland streams in Southern California.
