Santa Barbara County First District Supervisor Das Williams — Speak Up to Stop Gun Violence

Speak Up for Safety

Last weekend I had the opportunity to join Moms Demand Action Santa Barbara to participate in Wear Orange Weekend. Together we helped pick up trash and weeds at Ortega Park and celebrated the historic murals. We know what it takes to stop gun violence. Having beautiful and clean spaces for our youth is a big part of that. We also need action. Common sense gun safety measures like the Gun Violence Restraining Order law I authored in the State Assembly have prevented over 58 mass shootings in California since 2016, by temporarily removing guns from those who pose harm to themselves or others. Our Member of Congress Salud Carbajal is leading the effort in Washington, D.C. to incentivize states across our nation to adopt these laws because they work. But these laws only keep us safe when our friends and neighbors are informed about them and utilize them in times of need.

Below you will find information about Gun Violence Restraining Orders and how different people in contact with people who may be at risk of hurting themselves or others with a gun utilize them.

Please help us spread the word about this tool and visit speakforsafety.org to learn more.

What is a GVRO?

The Gun Violence Restraining Order (GVRO) is a law that allows family members, household members, some employers, colleagues, teachers, and law enforcement to work with courts to temporarily remove guns and prevent the purchase of new guns by individuals who pose a significant risk of harm to themselves or others. The media and some organizations sometimes refer to the GVRO and similar laws as so-called “Red Flag Laws”.

If you are in immediate danger, please contact local law enforcement or dial 911.

What Can I Do?

If you know someone, or come into contact with people who may be at risk of hurting themselves or others with a gun, you should know what options you have to speak for safety with a GVRO.

Honoring Those Who Sacrificed

On this past Memorial Day I was struck by how important it is for us to remember. We remember those that have made sacrifices for our freedom, and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. These brave people fought to protect our rights and freedoms abroad, and here at home to expunge the sin of slavery. We must remember them, and we must remember that their triumph was not a foregone conclusion. And the struggle for justice and democracy is not over. At this moment when democracy is challenged here at home and by a brutal dictator in Europe, we must remember that the sacrifice of veterans before us was not just for our community and for our nation, but for our ideals and system of government. Thank you to the Carpinteria Lions Club and the Pierre Claeyssens Veterans Foundation for putting on ceremonies of remembrance today.

Prepare your pet for July 4th

Santa Barbara County Animal Services is offering 30 days of free microchipping aimed at safeguarding our beloved furry companions.

The 4th of July holiday is a time of celebration, but unfortunately, it also brings an increased risk of pets becoming lost or separated from their owners. More pets are reported missing during this period than any other time of the year.

SBCAS has experienced 6 months of increases of lost pets coming into our shelters. For years, they have had a strong commitment to being a “no-kill” shelter, but their capacity is being seriously challenged now.

For more information on this initiative and to find the nearest participating location, please visit the County Animal Services website.

Highway 101 Construction Update

The Santa Claus Lane Bikeway, located between Santa Claus Lane and Carpinteria Avenue between the freeway and railroad tracks, will be finished and opened this Summer. Crews have already finished paving the bikeway and are working on installing safety railing and striping. This project will close a gap in the California Coastal Trail between Sand Point Road and Carpinteria Avenue.
With the 101 Montecito Segment project beginning this summer, it’s a good time to remind drivers that there will be a number of on-ramp and off-ramp closures occurring at San Ysidro Rd. and Posolipo Rd. The most important thing to remember is that all detours lead to Sheffield Road. You can find a complete list of closures and detours here.
