Santa Barbara County First District Supervisor Das Williams — Cuyama Fire Station Opens

Cuyama Fire Station Opens

Last Thursday, a significant milestone has been achieved that has been in the works the entire time I’ve been Supervisor. With the opening of Fire Station 27, Our most remote community has finally received the Fire Station it deserves. As Supervisor for Cuyama, I always strive to ensure equitable services and emergency response for every part of the County. This project has been made possible through the active participation of many dedicated Cuyama community members. I want to give a special shoutout to Mrs. Fursteinfeld’s 6th Grade Class who joined the ribbon-cutting ceremony. I am certain that there are some future first responders among this great group of students!

Celebrating Juneteenth

June 19, 1865 marks the date when Union troops entered Galveston, Texas, and freed the last enslaved people — a full two years after President Lincoln had issued the emancipation proclamation. The origin story of Juneteenth is an instructive reminder of what Civil Rights leader Fannie Lou Hamer would say almost a century later: “Nobody’s free until everybody’s free.”This Juneteenth is a time to reflect not just on the freeing of enslaved people, but also on how we can come together to support our Black community. This week there are many events happening across our County to celebrate Juneteenth and Black arts, culture, and history. I hope you’ll join me in celebrating the 156th Juneteenth.

U.S. Surgeon General Issues Advisory on Social Media and Mental Health

In late May, the United States Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy released a new Surgeon General’s Advisory on Social Media and Youth Mental Health. While social media may offer some benefits, there are ample indicators that social media can also pose a risk of harm to the mental health and well-being of children and adolescents. Social media use by young people is nearly universal, with up to 95% of young people ages 13-17 reporting using a social media platform and more than a third saying they use social media “almost constantly.” You can learn more about strategies to promote healthy social media use here.
