Rotary Club Montecito Gives $12,500 in Scholarships to SBCC Students

Conversations about gender equity and sexual harassment are taking place on college campuses across the country, and SBCC is no exception. In response, an ad-hoc committee has been assembled to identify policy issues where new policies may be needed or existing policies changed.

Celina Lazaro: Amazon Future Engineer

Summer may be fading into memory now that Fall is here, but for SBCC grad Celina Lazaro, summer 2018 marked a turning point in life. As the only student from a community college selected for a 12-week full-time internship as an Amazon Future Engineer, she was inspired to envision a future for herself that includes volunteer work and mentoring others as part of an engineering career.

MESA Students Recount Their Experiences as NASA Scholars

On September 14, four students in SBCC’s Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) program gave a presentation about each of their experiences as NASA Community College Scholars (NCAS) over the summer. NCAS gives community college students a NASA experience and encourages them to finish a 2-year degree or transfer to a 4-year university to pursue a NASA-related field or career. Read more…

Garvin Theatre: “The Game’s Afoot” October 12 – 27

 A murderously funny whodunit, with plenty of plot twists and turns, “The Game’s Afoot” opened at the Garvin Theatre over the weekend to an enthusiastic audience. 
The action takes place on a snowy, Christmas eve in 1936 at the Connecticut country home of an actor famous for playing Sherlock Holmes. His guests are four fellow actors ready for a weekend of revelry, but when a murder takes place after a surprise guest appears, mayhem ensues.
Each member of the talented ensemble cast brought energy and humor to this rollicking evening of suspense and hilarity.

Atkinson Gallery Exhibition: Alison O’Daniel’s “Tuba Thieves”

Be sure to visit the Atkinson Gallery October 29 through December 7, for the exhibition, “Tuba Thieves” by Alison O’Daniel. A visual artist and filmmaker, O’Daniel, who is hard of hearing, wears hearing aids, and lip-reads, explores sound and its perceived absence as a central concept in her work.  Read more…

28th Annual Leonardo Dorantes Lecture with Patrisse Cullors

Artist, organizer, educator, and popular public speaker, Patrisse Cullors is a Los Angeles native and Co-Founder of the Black Lives Matter Global Network and Founder of grassroots Los Angeles-based organization Dignity and Power Now. She has been honored with various awards including the Sydney Peace Prize Award in 2017.

Trunk or Treat!

On Friday, October 26 the SBCC Athletic Department will host its 2nd Annual “Trunk or Treat.” This community event is geared toward children under the age of 13 and is free for all who attend. As a safe, alternative trick or treat event, cars decorated in Halloween themes will be lined up in Parking Lot 2C where our student-athletes — dressed in costume — will hand out candy to children. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. and closes at 7:30 p.m. Join us!

Freaky Fall Feature: Free and Family Friendly!


On Friday, November 2, from 6:30 to 8:30, the SBCC Associated Student Government and The Office of Student Life will sponsor a free showing of the 1990 feature film, Edward Scissorhands, directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder. Bring your blankets, chairs and jackets and join us on the West Campus Lawn. Snacks will be provided.

Jurkowitz Theatre: “The Last Lifeboat”

SBCC Theatre Arts will present a student showcase production of “The Last Lifeboat” in the Jurkowitz Theatre, November 7-17. Directed by Associate Professor R. Michael Gros, “The Last Lifeboat” is the untold story of J. Bruce Ismay, the owner of the White Star Shipping Line when The Titanic sank. This epic tale explores not only the tragedy itself, but the sensationalized trials and aftermath of that fateful night. Click here for more details about the show and ticket information…

Election Day: November 6

On Tuesday, November 6, registered voters will have the opportunity to cast ballots for the candidates of their choice at the national, state and local levels. Among the local races are 5 seats on the SBCC Board of Trustees. The last day to register to vote in Santa Barbara County is October 22.

The SBCC Board of Trustees will meet at 4 p.m. in A-211 on October 11 and October 25. The Agenda for Board Meetings can be found at least 72 hours prior to the meeting on the Board webpage.
