SBCC The Bridge

Santa Barbara City College’s Community Newsletter

NOVEMBER 2020

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, SBCC continues to provide students with instruction and virtual support services aimed at keeping them on track with their education, staying connected and healthy. We are also providing our entire community with history-making, innovative musical and dramatic entertainment that can be viewed online. The SBCC Foundation Campus Conversations series this month peeks behind the curtain to reveal how the Theatre Arts department is keeping theatre alive and thriving on the South Coast, and EOPS/CARE is providing a way for the community to see that our single-parent students give their families a Thanksgiving dinner. Read about all of this and more below.

“Looking Back, Looking Forward” extended through Nov.

The Theatre Group at SBCC’s original musical revue, “Looking Back, Looking Forward,” has proven so popular that access to this virtual show has been extended until Nov. 30. Calling it “a generous helping of great Broadway show tunes performed by a remarkably talented cast,” the S.B. Independent suggests, “Put it on while you’re at home staying safe yourself and it will make your night.” Read the review in the S.B. Independent. (Note that the review was written before the original closing date was extended.)

SBCC music instructor reflects on his musical journey

Tony Ybarra, jazz improvisation and guitar studies instructor, was recently interviewed for a feature in the Ventura County Reporter. He recalls how while a student at SBCC he discovered Latin jazz and flamenco, and later went on to USC where he earned his master’s degree in guitar performance. Remaining optimistic despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, he believes, “When COVID ends, the world will need music and art just to heal the soul. Music gives release to those who listen.” Read more…

Click to view the “Antigone” video trailer
You won’t want to miss the Student Showcase production of Sophocles’ “Antigone,” translated by Paul Woodruff, directed by R. Michael Gros and streaming on-demand Nov. 14-30. Law and justice, adherence to authority and the power of the state vs. individual responsibility are just a few of the issues this classical Greek drama asks us to consider. This presentation will take a new format with a video performance by actors all over the world participating. Retaining all of the rich emotional impact of Sophocles’ original text in a marvelously contemporary translation, our production of Antigone has been created with a visual presentation style inspired by design elements of a graphic novel. The SBCC Foundation invites you to join the conversation

Twice a month, the SBCC Foundation invites the community to participate in a series of virtual gatherings, Campus Conversations. Launched in April, 2020 as COVID Conversations, the rebranded Campus Conversations continues to introduce you to the many departments and programs that make SBCC not only a top-rated educational institution, but also a significant driver of a healthy and vibrant South Coast region. These 45-minute Zoom get-togethers feature discussions with leaders of various campus departments and programs, followed by a Q&A.
The Nov. 5 conversation, “SBCC Theatre – A Look Behind the Curtain” featured Katie Laris, Co-Chair of SBCC’s Theatre Arts Department; Pamela Shaw, resident costume designer for The Theatre Group at SBCC; and Ben Crop, the Theatre Arts Department’s technical director. The team discussed their programs, how they serve students to advance their life goals and how they’ve adapted to COVID-19.

SBCC’s “The Well” hosts virtual dog therapy event

On National Kindness Day, Nov. 13, The Well (part of SBCC’s Student Health and Services) provided students with a much-needed day to de-stress and feel uplifted via Zoom. The virtual dog therapy event, “Wag Well, Be Well,” gave participants the opportunity to experience and enjoy some “paws-itivity” and a general “pup-lifting” time with therapy dogs that were available to meet online.

Joyce Coleman selected as V.P. of School of Extended Learning

At their Nov. 12 meeting, the Santa Barbara City College Board of Trustees approved Ms. Joyce Coleman as the new Vice President, School of Extended Learning. Coleman has over 28 years of experience as a community college educator and administrator —18 years in California and 10 years in Minnesota and Oregon. She describes herself as someone who has provided equity-minded leadership, vision and effective management in all of the positions she has held. Her prior experience includes Dean of Students at Bakersfield College, Dean of Community Learning Programs at Mt. Hood Community College, Vice President of Student Services at Umpqua Community College, and Vice President of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management at Century College.

Coleman states that her action plan has always been to lead by example with her heart, head and hands, and “to provide others with an awareness and knowledge of cultural humility with a major aspect being self-exploration.” She continued by paraphrasing Brazilian educator and philosopher Paulo Freire, “Education doesn’t change the world, people change the world and education changes people – we are all students and teachers.”

A first-generation college graduate, Coleman is a graduate of Sam Houston State University and has a masters degree from University of Houston.

The faculty, staff and administration welcome Joyce Coleman to the SBCC community.

Plans for Spring 2021 semester announced

The Spring 2021 semester at SBCC will be primarily online with some in-person classes. The plan is to schedule more in-person classes than were offered in Fall 2020 so that some students may take a full load in-person if they choose to do so. In-person classes will be held only if public health metrics allow for such classes in January 2021. The college will follow its COVID-19 plan for health and safety in all cases.

Your opportunity to give this Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving marks the beginning of the holiday season and for many of our single-parent students, food insecurity remains a real struggle. Although we traditionally hold an on-campus Thanksgiving Dinner Giveaway, we will be doing things a bit different this year. Single-parent families in the EOPS/CARE and CalWORKs programs will be given a Thanksgiving meal gift card so that they can celebrate with their families in ways that are significant to them this holiday season. If you would like to contribute your support of $30 or more, There are three ways to make a donation:
  • Visit the SBCC Foundation online donation page by clicking HERE. Please select “Other” under Donation Designation and type “EOPS/CARE Thanksgiving Giveaway” under other gift instructions.
  • Mail a check to the SBCC Foundation (721 Cliff Drive, Santa Barbara, CA 93109). Make the check payable to the SBCC Foundation and in the memo line write: “EOPS/CARE Thanksgiving Giveaway.”
  • Call the SBCC Foundation at (805) 730-4405 to make a donation with a credit card over the phone.
