The SBCC community is invited to attend public forums on Oct. 24 for the two finalists for the position of Superintendent/President: Utpal K. Second annual concert to benefit SBCC Music Department receives rave reviews 

For the second year in a row, SBCC jazz ensembles, alumni and faculty artists shared the Lobero Theatre stage with local rock legend Michael McDonald in a benefit concert for the SBCC Music Department. “I’m proud to support the arts at City College,” commented McDonald, “It really provides a place for musicians to get experience. SBCC honors first woman to receive career skills certificate while incarcerated

At a ceremony held at the Santa Barbara County Jail on September 30, Kylee Shane was honored by the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office and SBCC after becoming the first woman to receive an SBCC Career Skills badge and certificate while incarcerated. The digital badge demonstrates mastery of specific skills, such as supervision, leadership, motivation, and productivity. Read more…

SBCC Board of Trustees hosts State of the College address

At the Schott campus on October 3, the Board of Trustees hosted a special State of the College board meeting to share with the community the challenges and educational priorities for this academic year. One of the key issues discussed was the fact that the state funding formula has yet to be determined by the state, so the college will not know what the budget is until Feb. 2020. Watch the KEYT news story

Brenden Chapman sets an example of resilience after overcoming cancer

Offensive lineman Brenden Chapman (“Chappy” to his Vaquero teammates) spent several months of his young adult life battling colon cancer. After treatment and recovery he made the decision to enroll at SBCC with the hopes of opening his own restaurant. With his enrollment came the opportunity to play football for the first time since high school. Study Abroad student shares her experiences in Paris

As part of the SBCC Study Abroad program, interior design student Jasmine Brewster is in Paris this term, immersing herself in European history, architecture, art and culture.

Nursing students administer flu vaccine to seniors

Santa Barbara’s Annual Senior Expo has been a premier health fair and services exposition for older adults and caretakers for 30 years. The SBCC School of Nursing students (LVN and RN) and faculty volunteers administer the seasonal flu vaccine to hundreds of seniors every year. This year a total of 25 students and five faculty volunteered, and over 700 shots were administered. Read more…

MESA alumni gather for reunion

Alumnus Juan Zepeda (2008) was recently recognized as a Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) Award Star Winner. Now working for Raytheon, Juan was active in the Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) program while a student at SBCC. Since then he has continued to support students as a mentor and recently organized a MESA alumni reunion. Two current students joined the 20 alumni who are now working professionals.

2019 Leonardo Dorantes Memorial Lecture

SBCC is pleased to bring Dr. Marc Lamont Hill to campus on Wednesday, Nov. 13, to deliver the 2019 Leonardo Dorantes Memorial Lecture, “Building Community in an Hour of Chaos.” Join members of the community in the Garvin Theatre at 6 p.m., as noted scholar and award-winning journalist Dr. Hill offers a critical analysis of the current social and political moment. Free parking will be available on the West Campus after 5 p.m.

Trunk or Treat

On Friday, Oct. 25, the SBCC Athletic Department and Our Mesa Neighborhood (OMNI) will host the “Mesa Fall Fest Trunk or Treat.” This community event is geared toward children under the age of 13 and is free for all who attend. As a safe, family-oriented Halloween alternative, this event on the West Campus Lawn will feature trick or treating, kids’ games, a taco truck, a reggae band and a costume contest. The fun begins at 5 p.m. and closes at 7 p.m. Read more…

This two-day festival at the New Vic Theatre brings together professional and pre-professional companies from California and Baltimore, MD. Performing companies include SBCC Dance Company, Peabody Dance Ensemble, UCSB Dance Company, The Thacher Dance Ensemble, Santa Barbara Festival Ballet, State Street Ballet Youth Dancers, AKOMIDance, Jess Harper & Dancers, and FUSE Dance Company. IN MEMORIAM

Ray O’Connor remembered by friends and colleagues

“SBCC and Santa Barbara have lost one of the most accomplished and talented citizens to ever grace its environs. Raymond (Ray) F. O’Connor died at Serenity House on September 28, 2019, at the age of 92. He joined the faculty of Santa Barbara City College in 1965 as a member of the Chemistry Department faculty. Prior to that he taught biology and microbiology at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, and chemistry and mathematics at the Thacher School in Ojai…” (Read the full obituary…)

The next meeting of the SBCC Board of Trustees is scheduled for Nov. 14, at 4 p.m. at the main campus in room A211. The final meeting for 2019 is scheduled for December 12, at 4 p.m. at the main campus in room A211.
