Congratulations to the Class of 2022!
|
|
It was a picture-perfect day on May 13, when under clear blue skies faculty, staff, administrators, trustees, family and friends gathered at La Playa Stadium to celebrate commencement day for the 1,449 students in the Class of 2022. Students from previous years 2020 and 2021 who didn’t receive an in-person commencement ceremony due to the pandemic were also invited to “walk” and be recognized for their achievements.
After opening remarks from Interim Superintendent/President Dr. Kindred Murillo and Academic Senate President Dr. Raeanne Napoleon, student speaker Lisandra Barrera-Rising took to the podium. Delivering an inspiring account of her academic journey, she also praised her fellow graduates for their tenacity and perseverance for completing their classes in the middle of a pandemic. A total of 3,611 degrees or certificates were awarded, with 585 students graduating with honors and receiving gold tassels. Though the average graduate was about 26 years of age, the oldest was 88 and the youngest was 16. A majority of the graduates were women, representing 64 percent of the class.

The Scheinfeld New Venture Challenge business plan and pitch competition returned for its 12th season on Friday, April 29, showcasing some of our region’s most exciting and innovative college and high school student entrepreneurs. Vaqueros give back to community on Monroe Elementary School’s beautification day
Our Vaqueros have given many assists this year on the court, on the field and in the classroom. On April 9, some generous members of our Vaquero family gave up their Saturday to give an assist to the community, heading out to Monroe Elementary School to volunteer and help construct bike trails around the campus. 2022 Commencement speaker Lisandra Barrera-Rising
Lisandra Barrera-Rising, a non-traditional student in her 30s, received two Associate of Arts degrees and graduated with a 3.6 GPA. A sociology major, she will be transferring to UCSB with plans to be a marriage and family therapist. Lisandra credits the academic guidance she received from SBCC and support from her family for helping her pursue — and achieve — her dreams, exclaiming, “Here’s to second chances!”

Cameron Black receives Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship
A double major in both psychology and communications, Cameron also served as the Associated Student Government’s Vice President of Internal Affairs. He will be attending Stanford University in the Fall. Read more about Cameron in The Channels…

2021-22 Outstanding Student of the Year awards
Each year SBCC presents the Outstanding Student of the Year awards. These awards honor students who have exceeded scholastically or who have shown remarkable service to the college. Students are chosen by faculty and staff.

SBCC Foundation Spring Forward! Gala ~ Sunday, May 22
|
|
The SBCC Foundation’s Spring Forward! Gala will be held Sunday, May 22, 4-7 p.m., outdoors on the beautiful Great Meadow of SBCC’s West Campus. All are welcome to join us in celebration of our community’s college!
The event will benefit the work of the SBCC Foundation, which provides more than $5 million each year to support the SBCC Promise, scholarships, emergency grants, and more.

The tradition of musical excellence and innovation continues
Santa Barbara’s premier choral ensemble, Quire of Voyces, will perform at St. Anthony’s Seminary, 2300 Garden Street, Saturday, May 28 at 3 p.m. and Sunday, May 29 at 3 p.m.
$20 general, $15 students/seniors.

Dual Enrollment ‘Vaquero Roundup’ a big success
|
|
On Wednesday, April 6, SBCC Admissions & Records hosted “Vaquero Roundup,” a special Dual Enrollment event for high school students from the Santa Barbara Unified School District and Carpinteria High School. It served as a one-stop-shop to help students complete every step of the dual enrollment process for summer prior to the first day of registration
There were 583 parents and family members in attendance and 447 students who registered. It was an all-hands-on-deck event, with counseling, applications assistance and support services to ensure students received all the help they needed.

Unity in the CommUNITY Festival
|
|
On April 27, members of the SBCC Community celebrated and shared their cultural heritage through food, art and music. Students had the opportunity to share poems about resilience, building community, facing adversity and pride in one’s heritage through the dynamic poetry slam. A catered lunch from El Zarape was enjoyed by all!
|
|
SBCC Ethics Debate Team takes second place in international competition
SBCC’s Ethics Debate Team, advised by Philosophy Professor Marc Bobro and consisting of students Leonard Delgadillo (math and philosophy), Hunter Gomersall (philosophy) and Kayla Guran (philosophy), competed in the International Business Ethics and Sustainability Case Competition during the first week of April. The competition consisted of three separate presentations, and the excellent SBCC team earned second place in two of the three. From the field of teams from all over the world, SBCC was the only community college represented. Their main presentation was titled “Neuralink: Revolutionary Brain Technology or Abusive Intrusion?”

SBCC receives CCPRO award for 2021 commencement video
The Community College Public Relations Organization (CCPRO) held its annual conference this year in Lake Tahoe, April 6-8. The conference provides marketing and public relations professionals a unique opportunity to network with peers, share best practices and challenges, and garner work and career advice. SBCC received the third place award in the “Video Profile” category for our 2021 commencement video.

Former SBCC physics professor Bill Miller
Former physics professor Bill Miller died at age 97 on April 2, 2022, leaving behind a legacy of achievement and admiration. Miller was a well-loved professor in our science department, teaching multiple generations of physics students throughout his career. Even after over three decades of teaching, Miller never fully retired. His love of teaching kept him coming back to teach classes until he neared the age of 80.
