Message from the Chancellor

In his recent op-ed piece titled “Don’t let California’s community college system be devastated by the coronavirus recession,” Chancellor Eloy Ortiz Oakley made a strong case for keeping community colleges a priority in upcoming state budget planning. Food Pantry drive-thru provides for students amidst COVID-19 crisis 

More than 100 cars came out for City College’s Food Pantry drive-thru on April 1 to receive bags of food items provided by the Santa Barbara Food Bank. The first of its kind event was carried out by Food Pantry workers donned in gloves and masks, who managed the long lines, took students’ information and carefully packed bags. SBCC student by day, EMT by night

Working five nights a week from 7 p.m.–7 a.m. saving people from near death is probably not how most college students would choose to spend their time, but SBCC student Tia Taylor wouldn’t have it any other way.
Nineteen-year-old Tia is the youngest Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) at the station at the American Medical Response Station in Goleta. Read more…

Study Abroad student enjoyed rich – though short – experience in Italy

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the spring semester for all of our students, especially the students who were part of the Study Abroad Program. Christiana Leonardo was in Florence, Italy, when it was announced the program was suspended. As she learned in just a short time, things don’t always work out the way you planned.

Water Polo tops SBCC’s ‘Great 8’ in 2019–20

Halfway through the semester all spring sports and state championships were cancelled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. That didn’t stop Women’s Water Polo player Taylor Brooks, who rewrote the record book, breaking SBCC’s school record and topping California with 134 goals in 35 games.

SBCC’s online Medical Coding Program recognized as one of the nation’s best

With online learning becoming ever more important in higher education today, SBCC stands poised to deliver. The Medical Coding Specialist Program – which is offered entirely online – has been recognized by Intelligent.com as one of the best online medical coding programs in the U.S.

SBCC Online Photography Program wins second award for 2020

For the second time in six months the online Photography program at SBCC has received recognition as one of the best online photography programs in the nation. Last December Intelligent.com rated the program number seven on a list that included such schools as Yale University and the New York Institute of Photography. More recently, Great Value Colleges rated the program number four out of the top 11 colleges and universities in the U.S.
