Santa Barbara City College is pleased to present the 2019-2020 Report to the Community, an informative and beautifully illustrated account of the college’s events, activities and accomplishments during this past academic year.

Everyone in the community is invited to flip through the online version to learn more about student success, athletic highlights, artistic triumphs, outstanding faculty and staff, awards and accolades, community connections, and how the college adapted to the COVID-19 pandemic and conversion to delivering instruction and services remotely.

SBCC Nursing students volunteer their services

When the Public Health Department called for volunteers to help administer flu shots at several free clinics it was hosting throughout the county, students enrolled in the final semester of SBCC’s Associate Degree in Nursing Program were eager to be of service. Between Sept. 27 and Oct. 13 they attended flu clinics at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, Lompoc High School, San Marcos High School, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Carpinteria and Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria. SBCC joins partnership to train students in data science

As part the Central Coast Data Science Partnership, SBCC is one of four academic institutions working to train students in data science through coursework and real-world projects. Students learn data-generating processes and the role of measurement, ethics and privacy, information-processing tools, and the oral and written communication skills necessary for pursuing professional careers in the field. Arts instructors get creative with new ways of teaching remotely

Of all the places on campus that had to transition to serving students remotely because of the COVID pandemic, perhaps the hardest hit were the performing arts departments. That hasn’t defeated SBCC’s Theatre, Music, Dance and Art departments, however. Experimenting with new technologies and new methods, those departments are coming up with innovative ways to reach their students and fulfill their mission.

Former STEM student shares her experience and gratitude

As a student at SBCC, Jeanette Espinoza (Spring 2020) was a shining star: Participating in the NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars summer program and receiving Honorary Mention when her team of women coders designed a time-management app at a UCSB Hackathon were just a few of her notable accomplishments. Now a student at San Diego State, she reflects on her summer internship at Northrop Grumman and her time at SBCC. Read more…

Veteran adapts to online classes after nine years of service in the Navy

After serving in the United States Navy, earning the rank of Petty Officer Second Class and having experiences around the world, veteran Brian Ware enrolled at SBCC. Adjusting to life as a college student and taking classes online presented a challenge at first, but thanks to the support of the SBCC’s Veterans Support and Resource Center, Brian feels he’s up to par.

Don’t miss this on-demand live-stream performance

The Theatre Group at SBCC, working hard to offer uplifting entertainment even though actors and audiences can’t be together in person, is excited to announce an on-demand, live-stream performance of “Looking Back, Looking Forward,” a musical revue directed by Katie Laris with musical direction by David Potter. The streaming will run Oct. 17-Nov. 7. You can purchase one ticket per household to view it. Click here for more information. 

Undocumented Student Week of Action 2020

Undocumented Student Week of Action (Oct. 19-23) is in its fourth year and is a system-wide campaign to advocate and provide support resources for our undocumented student population. SBCC is participating this year by scheduling panels, guest-speakers, workshops and other events to provide information and resources for our students, staff, faculty and administration.  Click here for information on daily events.

Los Angeles-based artist Muna Malik exhibition at the Atkinson

The Atkinson Gallery at SBCC will host an exhibition by Los Angeles-based artist Muna Malik, “Blessing of the Boats,” Oct. 23-Dec. 11, 2020. Since the interior space of the Atkinson Gallery is currently closed to the public due to COVID-19, the installation will be presented on the Gallery’s outdoor sculpture terrace so that it may be viewed remotely from Pershing Park and other locations around the city. Scheinfeld Center publishes annual report

The Scheinfeld Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation recently published its 2019-2020 Annual Report. Everyone is invited to flip through the online version to learn more about the work the Center is doing to inspire a startup ecosystem in Santa Barbara that supports meaningful and sustainable livelihoods for all. Read about the programs, the impact and the accomplishments of student entrepreneurs here.

It is also where students give reviews on the colleges they are currently attending. In September, we received word that students have rated Santa Barbara City College among the top schools.
