College receives grant to feed hungry students 

Thanks to a grant from the state agency CalRecycle, Santa Barbara City College and Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria will split $116,000 toward feeding students on our campuses who need extra food. The Community Environmental Council has partnered with SBCC to save already-prepared food from businesses that would otherwise throw it out.

SBCC receives Rice Diversity and Equity Award

At a ceremony in Sacramento on July 16, the prestigious Dr. John W. Rice Diversity and Equity Award was presented by California Community College Chancellor Eloy Ortiz Oakley to the SBCC Academic Senate committee, “Leaders for Equity, Antiracism and Reparations Now” (LEARN). This is the second year in a row the college has been selected for the Rice Award.

fStop Warrior Project grads exhibit their photos at Wake Campus

At a graduation ceremony for the fStop Warrior Project at Wake Campus on Aug. 10, eight central coast military veterans displayed their photographic work to the public. The fStop Warrior Project is a free 12-week college-level course in photography offered to veterans who have served in the military since Sept 11, 2001.

Alumnus and former dance student comes full circle
Over 20 years ago, Darion Smith studied dance at SBCC, inspired and encouraged by dance professor Kay Fulton. He then attended Folkwang University of the Arts in Germany and went on to study at the Bolshoi Ballet Academy in Russia. He has performed all over the world and now teaches dance at Howard Community College in Maryland, proud to follow in the footsteps of his mentor Kay Fulton. Watch the video

Study Abroad student shares her Vienna travel experience

As one of the Study Abroad students, political science major Laura Ludwig describes her first sensations upon arrival in Vienna, Austria, for the summer program as a mixture between excitement and nervousness. After a week, the nerves faded away and excitement for the adventure surfaced instead.

Michael McDonald to join SBCC music students in benefit concert

SBCC Music returns to the Lobero Theatre on Saturday, September 14, for a benefit concert featuring special guest Michael McDonald performing alongside SBCC Music students and faculty. Last year’s sold-out show was a highlight in the local music scene. Tickets are on sale now at the Lobero Theatre.

Girls Inc. on campus for summer day camp program

SBCC was pleased to host Girls Inc. in July for an exciting summer program that focused on developing new skills, engaging in experiential learning activities, and exploring creativity. Both pre-teen and teen-aged girls attended the program, which included campus tours and classes in chemistry, physics, math, computer science, biology and computer information systems. John Connelly appointed new director of the Atkinson Gallery

SBCC welcomes John Connelly as the new Director of the Atkinson Gallery. The Atkinson Gallery is the Art Department’s showcase for the visual arts, which hosts exhibitions of contemporary art each academic year featuring international, national, regional and student artists working in a wide range of styles and media.

Report to the Community

The 2018-2019 Report to the Community, an informative and beautifully illustrated account of the college’s events, activities and accomplishments during the past academic year, was published in late June. Flip through it online to learn more about student success, athletic highlights, artistic triumphs, outstanding faculty and staff, awards and accolades, community connections, outdoor education and the ongoing commitment to sustainability.

The next meeting of the SBCC Board of Trustees is scheduled for September 12, at 4 p.m. at the main campus in room A211. The agenda for Board meetings can be found at least 72 hours prior to the meeting on the Board webpage.
