SANTA MARIA — Righetti High School’s ASTRA Club will wrap up its food drive at the end of this week, delivering donated items to families and veterans challenged by these unprecedented times.
The last day to drop off nonperishable items is between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. in the parking lot in front of the library this Friday. The food drive deliveries begin Friday and continue Monday.
Called a Reverse Advent Calendar Schoolwide Food Drive, students are encouraging each other to give something each day instead of getting something each day.
Students who were not able to volunteer at the drop offs or make signs have been volunteering in other ways, according to science teacher Samantha Van Patten. One of those efforts involved donating time to partner with the community service group Altrusa of the Central Coast to make crafts and cards for senior centers in the area, Van Patten added.
Astra Club president Marissa Cuellar has led the donating community outreach with messages like, “Continue to work hard through this final stretch of the semester!”
“We are so proud of our generous students,’’ said advisors Danya DeBernardi and Dutch and Samantha Van Patten.
The food drive has also become a fun event for school clubs as a $100 prize will be given to the graduating class with the most donations. The Class of 2022 is in the lead.
Astra stands for ability service training responsibility achievement. It’s a chapter of an international service organization.
