OXNARD — Below is a list of events in observance of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day as well as information regarding City of Oxnard closures on Jan. 21, 2019, for the holiday.
January 21: Freedom March and Celebration
The MLK Committee of Ventura County will hold the 33rd annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., birthday celebration on Monday, Jan. 21, 2019. The day will begin with a freedom march from Plaza Park at Fifth and C Streets. Community members, spiritual leaders and elected officials will assemble at the park for prayer at 8 a.m. The march will begin at 8:15 a.m. and then proceed to the Oxnard Performing Arts Center (PACC), 800 Hobson Way.
The program at the PACC will begin at 9 a.m. and will feature youth speakers, scripture readings and musical selections by the MLK Community Choir directed by Dr. Angela Timmons. This year’s keynote speaker will be Falilah “Aisha” Bilal, Senior Trainer with the National Black Women’s Justice Institute. Transportation to Plaza Park will be available at the PACC starting at 7:30 a.m. Admission is $7. For further details, visit www.mlkventuracounty.com.
City of Oxnard holiday closures and reminders
Residents and businesses are reminded that City Hall and many City departments will be closed Monday, Jan. 21, 2019, in observance of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
Police and Fire department personnel will be on duty to provide patrol, fire, paramedic and other emergency services for the holiday. For life-threatening emergencies, always call 9-1-1. “If You See Something, Say Something” by calling the Oxnard Police Department at (805) 385-7740 for non-emergencies.
The Environmental Resources Division of the Public Works Department will suspend residential trash pickup on Monday, Jan. 21, 2019. Residential trash collection schedule will be delayed by one day for the remainder of the week. The customer call center for the Public Works Department will also be closed Jan. 21, 2019 for the holiday, but utility customers can pay their bills online at www.oxnard.org/online-payments or by phone at (805) 385-7816.
