SANTA MARIA — PVHS Avid students have created images of their future by carving pumpkins.

The work on the special assignments started a few weeks ago after several Avid classes picked up their free pumpkins on campus. The themes varied from class to class, but a few involved 2020 and doing research on a college or university, they were interested in. The students then posted their masterpieces on Padlet.com (https://padlet.com/tleornas/rvjb4zuppgme9ffj)

Some of the finished work shows the students desires to attend top institutions such as UCSB, UCLA, Harvard, Cal Poly and others.

“Carving my pumpkin really made me think about my future and the different universities I dream to attend,’’ said student Julissa Ruiz.

Panther Avid, Math and Tec Hotline Student Support Teacher Trestina Leornas-Hurtado said the assignment gave Avid teachers an opportunity to see students, not on Zoom.

“Decorating the pumpkin got them off the computer screen and let them be creative,’’ Leornas-Hurtado added.

AVID, which stands for Achievement Via Individual Determination, is designed to help students develop the skills they are going to need to be successful at the next level. The nationwide program places special emphasis on growing writing, critical thinking, teamwork, organization and reading skills.
