KING CITY — Earlier this month,
Peoples’ Self-Help Housing (PSHH) hosted a lottery in anticipation of their upcoming home ownership opportunity in King City: Mustang Court. Over twenty households participated in the lottery, which determines the processing order for the intake forms. Although a number of these forms have been received, PSHH will continue accepting throughout the next few weeks.
To be eligible for Mustang Court, applicants must have good credit and rental history, be a U.S. Citizen/Permanent Resident, and meet PSHH income limits. The minimum income limit is $40,000 and the maximum for a 1-4 person household is $71,850 or $94,850 for a 5+ person household. Intake forms are available for applicants at

Mustang Court will be PSHH’s first project in Monterey County, however the program has a rich history throughout the Central Coast. Since its founding in 1970, PSHH has helped over 1,200 low-income households throughout San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties become homeowners. Ten groups work together under professional supervision to build one another’s houses. A group can consist of family members or friends, aged 16 or older, who complete nearly all aspects of construction of a house, with the exception of the highly specialized work, which is contracted to licensed professionals. With each group contributing approximately 2,000 hours of labor, this “sweat equity” reduces costs by 20-25% and serves as the down payment.
