SANTA BARBARA — Since 2020, Hospice of Santa Barbara (HSB) has adjusted to the new realities that come with COVID-19 by creating their free illuminate Speaker Series – a virtual series which addresses aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic and offers active solutions to navigate through this new reality.
Next in the lineup will be Richard Louv, who will present “VITAMIN N” AND THE NEW NATURE MOVEMENT on Wednesday, October 19, 2022 from 6:00 to 7:00 pm PDT. The event is free, but registration is required.
Richard Louv’s books, including Last Child in the Woods, The Nature Principle, Our Wild Calling, and Vitamin N, have helped create an international movement to connect children to the natural world; this new nature movement has grown to include adults. Outside magazine reports that Louv’s work is “widely credited with helping spark an international movement to examine the therapeutic benefits of time spent outside. That movement is nearly ubiquitous today. New scientific papers revealing the power of wild places to counteract anxiety, stress, depression, ADHD, and even PTSD seem to make headlines every week.” Louv’s ongoing efforts have encouraged new, biophilic designs for schools, homes, workplaces, and facilities for aging. Over 1000 studies now show how our connection to nature enhances our physical, mental, and spiritual health, from childhood until the end of life.
“This is the first time we have an environment focused speaker as part of our illuminate series,” said David Selberg, CEO of Hospice of Santa Barbara. “This will be a new type of conversation and we are very excited to hear Richard Louv share his knowledge with our community.”
As we all know, people are reeling from this world-wide crisis emotionally, socially, and economically. People have shared a variety of intense feelings they are experiencing during this time, among them: fear, deep sadness, anxiety, grief, uncertainty over the present and what the future holds, vulnerability, despair, anger, hopelessness. HSB will present a new nationally-known speaker every other month.
The series ends this year with Jack Kornfield and Trudy Goodman in November. Hospice of Santa Barbara would like to give a special thanks to Santa Barbara Foundation, Robin and Roger Himovitz and Natalie Orfalea Foundation for sponsoring this event.
Past speakers of the series, include Roshi Joan Halifax, Frank Ostaseski, Katy Butler, Sharon Salzberg, Dr. BJ Miller, Dr. Sunita Puri, Jene?e Johnson, Daniel Goleman, Nora McInerny, Pico Iyer Amanda Kloots, Kristin Neff, and Kelly McGonigal.
