VENTURA — The Center for Nonprofit Leadership (CNL) at California Lutheran University will host its annual Celebration of the Sector on Thursday, November 6, 2025, from 4:30–7:00 p.m. at the Museum of Ventura County. This premier gathering of nonprofit and philanthropic leaders from across the Central Coast will feature a keynote address from Dr. Akilah Watkins, President and CEO of Independent Sector.
Watkins’ keynote, “Building Collective Power for Nonprofits and Philanthropy,” will highlight national charitable sector trends and explore current issues and opportunities shaping the nonprofit and philanthropic landscape. Drawing on recent research and her leadership experience guiding Independent Sector—the only national membership organization bringing together nonprofits, foundations, and corporations committed to strengthening civil society. Dr. Watkins will share insights on:
• Building public trust in charitable organizations
• Advocating effectively around shared priorities
• Advancing common agendas to strengthen civil society
“Each year, the Celebration of the Sector shines a light on the power and impact of nonprofits in our communities,” said Dena Jenson, Director of the Center for Nonprofit Leadership. “This year’s event is more than a gathering—it’s a call to action. We’re proud to host Dr. Akilah Watkins, whose national perspective will inspire us to act boldly here at home.”
The event is expected to draw hundreds of nonprofit professionals, funders, and civic leaders from across the region. Geoff Green, CEO of CalNonprofits, emphasized, “The nonprofit sector is our region’s most powerful force for good—and needed now more than ever.”
For many, the evening is also a time of deep connection and celebration. Jessica Halloran of Amgen called it, “the best event to meet, learn from, and celebrate the nonprofit community in Ventura County.” Kate McLean, Chair of the CNL Advisory Board, added, “It’s the biggest celebration of Ventura County’s nonprofit work. Vanessa Bechtel, CEO of the Ventura County Community Foundation, captured the spirit of the evening:
