Nov. 19 — Bilingual report — OPAC presents: A Town Hall on the Pending Eviction Crisis

OXNARD — OPAC, the Oxnard Performing Arts Center Corporation, will host a virtual Town Hall on the Pending Eviction Crisis on Thursday, November 19 from 4 to 6 pm on Zoom. The event is part of a two-year project called “CLOSE TO HOME: A Community Conversation Spotlighting the People, Places, and Perspectives Surrounding Homelessness.”

COVID-19, the pandemic-induced recession, and high-tension elections have dramatically compounded our community’s need for affordable housing, accessibility, equity, and justice. As eviction moratoriums come to a close and unemployment rates remain high, OPAC wants to address the pending eviction crisis. How does this affect already vulnerable communities? Who’s next? What comes next?

Supported in part by a grant from California Humanities, a non-profit partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities, the event features a dynamic lineup of speakers representing a variety of perspectives, including a landlord, a tenant, advocates, local government officials, and nonprofit leaders in the arts and housing:

  • Matt Capritto | Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties

  • Amy Duganne, Program Manager, Landlord Engagement | United Way of Ventura County

  • Tracy McAulay, Management Analyst, Community Development Division | County of Ventura

  • Carolyn Merino Mullin, Executive Director | OPAC

  • Maria Navarro, Ventura County Policy Advocate | CAUSE

  • Emilio Ramirez, Housing Director | City of Oxnard

  • Clyde Reynolds, Chairperson | Vulnerable Populations Housing Advocacy Network

  • Paul Stamper, Deputy Executive Officer | County of Ventura

The Town Hall will be moderated by Dr. Sunghee Nam, Sociology Faculty CSU CI, who serves as the “Close to Home” Humanities Advisor. Professional Spanish translation services will be provided by Bridging Voices.

About OPAC — A sustainable leader, OPAC is at the center of Oxnard’s artistic, educational, and economic life, inviting residents to discover, create, and connect through engagement with the arts and each other. Established in 1998, OPAC provides cultural and community programming by supporting, producing and presenting theater, dance, music, media/visual arts, residencies, and outside-the-box programs.

About “Close to Home” — Oxnard is being severely impacted by the state’s homeless crisis. The 2019 Count identified 548 people living on the streets, in vehicles or encampments, or in shelters within the city and another 2,500 living with friends or family. COVID-19 will only exacerbate this issue.

As the City prepares to build its first 24-hour, year-round shelter, Close to Home fosters a community conversation spotlighting the people, places, and perspectives surrounding homelessness. This project seeks to engage the community – the homeless, residents, students, artists, business owners, nonprofits, and local government – in this layered topic through an open, thoughtful, and humanistic series of events co-curated by humanities advisor and CSU CI sociology professor Dr. Sunghee Nam.
