Museum of Ventura County update for Oct. 17 — Member Appreciation Day and Dia de los Muertos

In honor of National AIDS Awareness month, the Museum of Ventura Countywill host a reception, October 19, 6:30 pm, to benefit the Museum and the Diversity Collective of Ventura County’s HIV/AIDS prevention and education program. The reception will showcase “Bringing the Boys Home,” four blocks of quilt panels from the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt, handsewn by members of NAMES Project Ventura County in the 1990s, brought back by the Quilt Project Gold Coast, Ventura County’s newest AIDS nonprofit. The Museum is located at 100 E Main St., Ventura. Admission is $5 for members and $10 for nonmembers.
The Museum of Ventura County’sAgriculture Museum will host René Corado, Saturday October 20, 1 pm – 2:30 pm as he reflects on his journey from Guatemala shoeshine boy to collections manager of the Western Foundation of Vertebrate Zoology. Emphasizing his research projects collecting thousands of eggs and nestsin the Amazon jungle of Ecuador and in Costa Rica. Admission is free for members and $5 for nonmembers. The Ag Museum located at 926 Railroad Avenue, Santa Paula. The Museum of Ventura County’s ‘Speaking of Ventura County’ lecture series is sponsored in part by Rabobank.

From 5:30 – 6 pm, the Museum of Ventura County will host local Chicano artists in the long-awaited Ayer y Todavia catalogfeaturing artwork from the 2017 Ayer y Todavia exhibit and including several rarely-seen works on loan from collectors. Several of the artists will be available to sign catalogs and share insight on their work. Catalogs are $20.
Beginning at 6 pm, the Museum will host the Mexican Consulate of Oxnard, Dia de los Muertos traditions will be celebrated with altars created by Club Uriangato de Guanajuato and music by local composer and guitarist Javier San Roman. Catrina will wander the grounds and greet visitors, Guanajuato artist and master craftsman, Eduardo Serrano Moreno, will create a sawdust “mandala-like” art piece, and several current pageant winners from the different states in Mexico dressed in their states’ official costumes will be on display, courtesy of the Mexican Government. The celebration will be held at the Museum of Ventura County, 100 E. Main St., Ventura. Admission is free to the public.
From 7 to 9 p.m., The Museum will host a Table Talk, a panel discussion on the influence immigrant communities have had in shaping the food culture of Southern California. The panel will include Ventura County Star Food Editor Lisa McKinnon, Alison Costa owner of Ventura Food Tours and Sarene Wallace from Edible Ojai and Ventura County Magazine. Serving as panel moderator will be nationally syndicated columnist and author Gustavo Arellano. The event will be held in the Museum’s Martin V. and Martha K. Smith Pavilion, 100 E. Main St., Ventura. Admission is free for members, $5 for nonmembers.

On Nov. 4, 10 am – 2 pm, the Ag Museum will host the Mexican Consulate of Oxnard, Oxnard College’s Ballet Folklorico Mestizo, Aztec dancers, musicians and crafts in a community-wide celebration. Free to the public. 926 Railroad Ave., Santa Paula.
