Creating Family Altars
with Dr. Roberto Vargas

The Days of the Dead season is here! It’s time to honor the lives of our dearest departed and send them love. You are invited to join us for a Zoom Workshop: Creating Family Altars with Dr. Roberto Vargas on Wednesday, October 14, 2020 from 6:30PM—7:45PM. In this free, family-friendly Zoom experience, Dr. Vargas will teach viewers how to celebrate Días de los Muertos by remembering their loved ones and creating a Family Altar, or ofrenda.
Additionally, viewers will learn the meaning of Días de los Muertos as a tradition to honor family and departed loved ones, and Dr. Roberto Vargas will review how to facilitate a simple Dias de los Muertos celebration in the home. This is a great opportunity to bring the household together for an evening of interactive learning and fun.

In celebration of Días de los Muertos, the Museum of Ventura County invites you and your family to pick-up a Grab ‘n Go Day of the Dead Craft Bag at the Ventura Museum (100 E. Main St., Ventura) on Saturday, October 17, 2020 @ 10AM (while supplies last) and at the Agriculture Museum in Santa Paula (926 Railroad Ave.) on Sunday, October 18, 2020 @ 12PM (while supplies last).
The MVC and AG Grab ‘n Go Day of the Dead Craft Bags include:
• Día de los Muertos mask-making kit
• Instructions on how to build your own at home altar (English and Spanish)
• Materials and instructions on creating Papel Picado
• Materials and instruction on creating tissue paper marigolds
• Recipe for baking Pan de Muerto
Drive-ups only, please. You will be met curbside by our friendly staff members. Gloves, masks and social distancing practices will be in place.

The Museum of Ventura County and the Ventura Botanical Garden is thrilled to host 14 regional artists in our first-ever collaborative exhibit, Arte Forastero. Sculptures and installation works have been installed in the Botanical Gardens nursery and lower trails and in the Museum’s outdoor Plaza along Main Street in Downtown Ventura.
Members of the Museum of Ventura County and Members of the Ventura Botanical Gardens receive free entry at both locations for the duration of the exhibit! Members of the Ventura Botanical Gardens will receive free admission to both the Ventura Museum (100 E. Main St.) and the Santa Paula Agriculture Museum (926 Railroad Ave., Santa Paula) once the Museums can safely reopen.
Arte Forastero is on display now through November 30, 2020.

14 Days with Omar: Separating the Light from the Dark

In the summer of 2009 I had the pleasure of meeting the Master artist, Omar d’Leon at his house in Camarillo. I was with Chief Curator of MVC, Ann Bermudez. We were there to ask Omar if I could “hang out” with him for a few weeks and document him working on his new painting. He generously agreed. This short film would be part of MVC’s exhibition featuring Omar in December 2009.
14 Days with Omar: Separating the Light from the Dark
I started work immediately. A few weeks turned into six months and a 10 minute film turned into 26 minutes. I had the privilege of listening to his stories, looking through his many photographs, eating lunch that Omar prepared and looking over his shoulder as he created his new work, Puberty, which became the central focus of the doc along with a wonderful interview conducted by Anna.
The interview covered many topics: his family and education, his mentor Roger Penalba, his struggle convincing this parents that he wanted to be a painter, his success as a artist and gallery owner in Nicaragua, the earthquake of 1972, his exodus from Nicaragua and his relocation to Camarillo, the history of art, his inspirations and his technique of cross hatching.
This revised and re-edited 28 minute version was completed in late September 2020 especially for this presentation. I’d like to thank the Museum of Ventura County for this generous opportunity to revisit the extraordinary Omar d’Leon
