The Murder of Tom More:
A True Crime Story
In the early hours of March 24th 1877, a mob of angry settlers set fire to Thomas More’s barn and shot him over 11 times. Motivated by a passionate battle over land ownership and water rights turned deadly, news of his murder rippled through California.
Amid the rubble of lies, perjuries, briberies, and omissions in the historical record, there are puzzles regarding his death that remain forever unsolved. His story stands today as a warning about the strong emotions unleashed over limited natural resources.
This exhibit is made possible by
the John Hammer Family.

Spin Cycle: Unfolding the
Science of Laundry
Everybody’s clothes get dirty, meaning we all must deal with the dreaded laundry! Through the years people have tried different ways to clean their clothes and now we have the science to explain why some of those methods actually work!
Using 19th and early 20th century laundry items from MVC’s historical collection, visitors will learn about the “how” and “who” behind everyone’s least favorite chore. Let’s explore how our everyday world works together.
This exhibit is made possible by the

Proximity to Water: Works from MVC’s Permanent Collection
Just in time for summer, come be inspired by the ever-changing coast captured by our regional artists.
From plein air painting to photography, the ever-changing coast provides an endless supply of inspiration. Art helps us admire, respect, and revere our region, reminding us of our own place in the natural world. Proximity means a closeness in space, time, or relationship. These artworks from the Museum’s permanent collection bring us closer to the water, both visually and in feeling.
This exhibit is made possible by the Esther and Thomas Wachtell Family Fund, the Paul and Anne Leavens Family Fund and the Bonita McFarland Fund.

YOUR DONATIONS MATTER
Click to Donate HERE
2023 marks the 150th anniversary of the establishment of Ventura County.
This year, the Museum is leading, along with the County, 150 days of celebrations, starting in June and ending in November. MCV will host events, programs, lectures, exhibits, festivals, and more across the County. This is the chance for the Museum to demonstrate what you already know: that our history is compelling, and that our arts and culture have created a place that is unique in all the world, and that with knowledge of what has come before us, we can all be part of creating a better future.
Your generous donation will make it possible for us to present inspiring and thrilling programs – and to turn everyone we meet into someone who understands how critical the Museum is as an institution in our County.
Please make a donation today to ensure that the 14,000 gallery and garden guests, 2300 program participants, 1100 school tour children attendees, over 9000 people across the world accessing online content and hundreds of researchers in the library (these are ONLY the numbers from the first 4.5 months of 2023!) continue to enjoy, grow, learn, and feel inspired. Moreover, let’s celebrate 150 years of doing what Ventura County residents do best: coming together.
Please consider donating HERE. |

CONGRATULATIONS ARE IN ORDER!
The Museum of Ventura County recently held our first docent graduation since 2015!
Docents are volunteers who have completed a rigorous training and then volunteer in a regular capacity at the Museum. A cohort of six volunteers completed a six month training program akin to “Ventura County History 101.” During the program, they researched a topic and then as a requirement of graduation they either wrote a research paper or presented to the Docent Volunteer Council.
The new docents’ research projects for this class were: El Jardin Patio, Pierpont Beach, The Forgotten E.W. Daily Family of Camarillo, History of Citrus Labels, The Chumash Tomols “The House of the Sea,” and Mosaics of Ventura County.
Congratulations to the Docent Volunteer Class of 2023. Thank you for volunteering at your museum! |

WELCOME OUR NEWEST STAFF
The Museum of Ventura County is pleased to welcome Heather Williams as the new Senior Event Sales & Communications Manager. With over 14 years of experience in the event industry, Heather brings extensive knowledge in Event Venue Sales Development as well as being an Event Planner & Coordinator. Her most recent role as Regional Event Sales Manager for the Improv Comedy Clubs & Levity Live Comedy Clubs across the country gave her even more insight into developing strategic sales and marketing plans specific to each venue and their markets. Heather is looking forward to increasing revenue within the Event Rental/Sales department while maintaining MVC’s standards of integrity, boldness, and empathy.
Heather will be evaluating both campus’ sales/rental departments. She will also oversee the Marketing department. Heather is excited to serve the museum. She can be contacted at hwilliams@venturamuseum.org. |

Pollination Investigation – The Essential Role of Pollinators in the Natural World
at the Agriculture Museum in Santa Paula
Nearly 90% of flowering plants rely on about 200,000 species of animal pollinators for fertilization. Explore the essential role that pollinators play in the natural world in the Smithsonian poster exhibition Pollination Investigation.
Through “pollinator profiles” visitors can learn about different pollinators—from butterflies and hummingbirds to bats and the wind—and their favorite flowers based on floral characteristics like flower shape, color, scent, and more. The set of 14 posters is bilingual (English and Spanish) and designed to educate and inspire people to explore the natural world looking at flowers and insects. Learn more here. |
