The Museum of Ventura County is pleased to present the first installment in its series of conversations with Changemakers: Dolores Huerta, Founder & President of the Dolores Huerta Foundation, civil rights activist and community organizer, will join longtime activist and civic leader Jorge Corralejo, documentary film producer and farmworker activist David Damian Figueroa, and Chief Curator Anna Bermudez for a Zoom Conversation onMonday, September 21, 2020 @ 6:30—7:30PM. Admission to Changemaker Series: A Zoom Conversation with Dolores Huerta, Jorge Corralejo, David Damian Figueroa, and Anna Bermudez is free with registration.

Dolores Huerta and Jorge Corralejo will discuss their time working together with the UFW, Dolores’ work building community and organization for change, and Jorge’s exhibit, Huelga! Photographs from the Frontline, plus much more. David Damian Figueroa and Chief Curator of the Museum of Ventura County Anna Bermudez will serve as moderators for this enlightening discussion. Attendees will have the opportunity to submit questions for the Q&A portion of the discussion. This is the first in the Museum of Ventura County’s Changemakers Conversations, a quarterly series of evenings with people whose actions have changed the way we live our lives, on both local and global levels. Our next conversation will be in January 2021; more information to follow.

This week we celebrate the start of Hispanic Heritage Month by featuring an artist in the Museum’s collection, Nicaraguan painter, Omar d’Leon.
A prolific master painter, Omar D’Leon (born Omar D’Leon Lacayo y Estrada in 1929 in Managua, Nicaragua) has held a place as one of the most renowned Nicaraguan painters for more than 60 years and is an internationally acclaimed Ventura County artist. The Museum of Ventura County and the Ventura Botanical Garden is thrilled to host 14 regional artists in our first-ever collaborative exhibit, Arte Forastero. Sculptures and installation works have been installed in the Botanical Gardens nursery and lower trails and in the Museum’s outdoor Plaza along Main Street in Downtown Ventura.
Members of the Museum of Ventura County and Members of the Ventura Botanical Gardens receive free entry at both locations for the duration of the exhibit! Members of the Ventura Botanical Gardens will receive free admission to both the Ventura Museum (100 E. Main St.) and the Santa Paula Agriculture Museum (926 Railroad Ave., Santa Paula) once the Museums can safely reopen.

Mr. Davis is back — this time discussing “Bobby,” Emilio Estevez’s 2006 film that follows the assassination of U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy, who was shot in the early morning hours of June 6, 1968 in the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, California.
Ivor Davis was with Bobby Kennedy on his presidential campaign in 1968—and in the kitchen when Kennedy was assassinated.

Reading LACMA Objects as
Products of Essential Agricultural Work

The expression “essential work” was one of the first new terms introduced to our lexicon since we began to shelter-in-place in March 2020. As we faced national shortages for the first time in recent memory, many people developed a greater appreciation for how supply chains work, what food symbolizes psychologically and emotionally, and which industries and individuals keep us alive.
LACMA’s collection is filled with objects inspired by the rich history of essential work in California’s agriculture industry. By focusing on three groups of objects—fruit bowls, objects aligned with state boosterism, and activist-oriented graphic design—this blog seeks to recenter the histories of labor that have enabled the state’s vast agricultural production.
