The Mixteco/Indígena Community Organizing Project unites Spanish, English and indigenous language speakers to aid and empower the Mixtec and indigenous communities in Ventura County (VC), estimated at 20,000 people. Mixtecs are immigrants from the Mexican states of Oaxaca and Guerrero, many of whom speak only their indigenous language and have limited literacy. MICOP operates multiple programs serving the indigenous community, including health education, case management, parenting support, literacy and English classes, and leadership and skills-building programs.
