MICOP Launches 12th Annual Tequio Scholarship Fund

?

Mixteco/Indigena Community Organizing Project (MICOP) hosted Tequio Rising on March 22nd, 2024, at Ventura County Community Foundation’s headquarters at 4001 Mission Oaks Blvd in Camarillo. During Tequio Rising, MICOP raised $57,700, surpassing the original goal of $50,000! This year marks the highest amount raised in MICOP history for Tequio Rising!

In 2023, MICOP’s Tequio Rising event raised $43,000 in scholarship money awarded to 47 students in Ventura and Santa Barbara County. Building on the success of the last 12 years, MICOP is now looking forward to providing more scholarships to eligible students. We believe that the scholarship program will be able to reach more Indigenous youth and enable them to achieve their full potential.

The Tequio Scholarship Fund was established in 2012 to encourage academic success in the Indigenous community. Edison International will supplement the 2024 Tequio Scholarship Funds to support Indigenous students in the tri-counties region, particularly those pursuing careers in STEM. Tequio Scholars have attended various institutions and pursued degrees in fields such as Environmental Science, Business Administration, Mechanical Engineering, Social Work, Linguistics, Arts/Animation, Regenerative Medicine, and beyond. The Tequio Scholarship is now open to eligible indigenous students in Ventura, Santa Barbara, and, for the first time, San Luis Obispo County! We are honored to be able to provide these funds for indigenous youth as they pursue higher education.

MICOP encourages academic success and achievement, and we hope that by providing these funds to our indigenous youth, they can accomplish their dreams. Applicants are not required to be US citizens, and undocumented youth are encouraged to apply.  Preference is given to students who have participated in MICOP’s Tequio Youth Group and undertaken community service; however, all eligible students will be considered.

Students may download the application from the MICOP website: https://mixteco.org//tequioscholarship/.  The application is due by May 20, 2024.  Recipients will be notified in May and receive their award before the 2024-2025 academic year starts.
We would like to thank our 2024 Tequio Rising Sponsors for their support in surpassing our goal of $50,000! Thank you to:
