Marching bands to compete at Oxnard High School on Nov. 12

More than 20 high school marching bands, with more than 1,400 musicians, will compete at the Oxnard High School Marching Band & Auxiliary’s 27th annual Field Show Competitition from noon to 9 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12 at Bud Houser Stadium, Oxnard High School, 3400 W. Gonzales Road, Oxnard. The event is open to the public.

“This event creates such a positive buzz with our band students, the staff and parent organization as well as the local community, and is a positive way of promoting music programs in our schools” Fundi Legohn, music director, stated in a media release. “This competition is very important to me this year because 2012 will mark the 20th year of my career as Music Director at Oxnard High School.”

Seven of the bands are from Ventura County including Adolfo Camarillo, Rio Mesa, Camarillo, Hueneme, Simi Valley, Royal and Buena high schools. Other participating high school bands include Lompoc, Gabrielino, Manual Arts, Redlands, East Bakersfield, Fairfax Academy, Nordoff, Arvin, Centennial, Pasadena, Frontier, San Luis Obispo, Northview, Dos Pueblos, Saugus, Santa Barbara, San Marcos and Redlands.

Special guest Donna Carroll Crockett will perform “The National Anthem” in the opening ceremony. Crockett has performed in television and theatre, and her credits include “Get Thee Behind Me,” which aired on punch TV starting October 2011. She recently completed a role in the upcoming short film “Enchanting Hands” and starred in the Christian-based film “Road2Damascus which will be available on DVD 2012

“Those who have never attended a marching band competition before will be in for a big treat” said Cassie Powell, the event’s field show coordinator. “The pageantry and the power of the bands, the creativity of their music and shows, and the beauty of the color guard flags ensure a unique and enjoyable experience for the entire family.”

The winning bands will receive awards and trophies which will be presented by local dignitaries.

Tickets are: Children 3 & under — free; general admission — $8; military/educators (w/ID) —$5; seniors/students (w/ID)/Children (4-12yrs) — $4.
