THE VENTURA COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY presents a Free Family History Mini-Seminar
Saturday, March 18, 2017
at the Camarillo Library Community Room
4101 Las Posas Road, Camarillo, CA
1:00 P.M.: Cheryl Storton: “Finding Family On The Wild Frontier: Important Strategies For Proving Parentage With No Direct Evidence”
A missing marriage bond incorrectly transcribed with a non-existent surname leads to confusion and the dissemination of false information. How does a genealogist overcome such an obstacle? A clue on another marriage bond filed almost thirty years later and extended research reveals the parents of “Lizza Badchell.” Cheryl’s presentation will concentrate on “brick wall” research strategies useful to all genealogists in all areas.
2:30 p.m.: Cafi Cohen: “Evidence and Proof: What’s the Difference?”
Whether you have been researching 3 months or 30 years, questions arise when adding ancestors to your family tree: When do you have enough documentation to link an ancestor to his parents? What kinds of documents count as evidence? How does evidence become proof? Why does the difference between evidence and proof matter? Regardless of the time period or geographic location, principles covered in this session will apply to you. This session begins with a 20-25 minute demonstration of examples of evidence and proof drawn from a dozen research projects. Following that, we will evaluate evidence and proof through 2-3 class exercises. We hope to increase your ability to evaluate the validity of your pedigree branches, always aiming to ensure that you are working on your family, not someone else’s.
