Lumina Alliance Recognizes October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Registration is open for Lumina Alliance’s Celebrate Community Festival and Walk for Survivors on Saturday Oct.28th in Downtown San Luis Obispo

SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY — Lumina Alliance is recognizing Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) this October, and inviting all of SLO County to join us this month in shining a light on domestic and intimate partner violence.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) was launched in October of 1987, with the goal of uniting and connecting organizations and people working to end domestic and intimate partner violence across the country. Over 30 years later, DVAM continues to be a time for collaboration, advocacy, and connection with the goal of raising awareness of the impacts of domestic and intimate partner violence. Lumina Alliance is proud to participate in DVAM, and to continue shining a light on intimate partner violence in our community.

Lumina Alliance has several events planned for the month for community members of all ages. The Celebrate Community Festival and Walk for Survivors takes place Saturday, October 28th, in Mission Plaza in downtown San Luis Obispo, and is a family friendly event brings together supporters throughout the county to walk in celebration of our vision to create a safe, thriving, and equitable community. Visit CelebrateCommunitySLO.org to register for this event, or come visit our SLO Farmers Market booth on October 19th to learn more. Visit LuminaAlliance.org/DVAM to see our full calendar of events. Finally, tune into KCBX this month to hear stories from rural migrant survivors about their experiences.

This year in particular we look to shine a light on the hidden costs of intimate partner violence in our community, as well as those groups whose survivorship often goes unacknowledged. While we recognize that intimate partner violence can be experienced by anyone, certain groups such as undocumented individuals, transgender individuals, and those living with disabilities are uniquely vulnerable to intimate partner and domestic violence. Despite this, these groups are often the least likely to have access to the services they need to heal and thrive, and the violence they experience is often in the shadows.

This October, we hope that you will join us in illuminating the path towards a brighter future for free from sexual and intimate partner violence.
