SAN LUIS OBISPO — After merging into one organization, Lumina Alliance (formerly known as RISE and Stand Strong) is launching its initial prevention project, ReDefineSLO: A social marketing campaign focused on improving the social, emotional, and physical well-being of children and pre-teen boys.
ReDefineSLO, which launches August 2nd, is an innovative approach to preventing sexual assault and intimate partner violence in San Luis Obispo County. The campaign aims to empower parents and caregivers with the tools to engage pre-teens in tough conversations about their social and emotional health, in order to end violence before it ever takes place.
The campaign is the culmination of three years of partnership between RISE and Stand Strong, which have now merged to make it easier for survivors to access services. For more information about Lumina Alliance and the organizational merger, click here.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, 1 in 4 women and nearly 1 in 10 men will experience sexual assault, physical violence, or stalking in their lifetimes and for most, that violence begins during their teenage years. Promoting healthy, respectful, and non-violent relationships makes a huge difference in protecting children from experiencing or perpetrating violence when they get older.
Knowing that learning happens beyond the classroom, Lumina Alliance created ReDefineSLO to make it easier for adults to support the growth of children in their lives by modeling healthy relationships and engaging them in tough conversations
Parents are tasked with an impossible job: Raise and educate children, while navigating life and family, with no guidance or resources, in the midst of a changing and turbulent world. ReDefineSLO aims to support adults in raising children, by providing them the tools to tackle some of the most difficult and nuanced issues facing teenagers today. The campaign features an interactive website, redefineslo.org, where parents, educators, and influential adults can explore tools to engage children in conversations around:
- Consent and bodily autonomy
- Gender
- Sex and Sexual Orientation
- Masculinity
- Emotional Trauma
- Race and ethnicity
- Disability
All ReDefineSLO materials are free and available in English and Spanish to everyone in San Luis Obispo County.
In addition to an interactive website and social media campaigns, Lumina educators will be offering workshops, 1 on 1 coaching, and violence prevention services to anyone in San Luis Obispo County for the duration of the campaign.
