The League of United Latin American Citizens is calling on the city of Oxnard to halt the practice of hiring former Oxnard Police Department Officials as “gang suppression” consultants and hire an external auditor to examine “perceived conflicts of interest,” the organization reported in a media release on Wednesday, Aug. 3.
“…The City of Oxnard has used grossly exaggerated and unsubstantiated statistical figures to position itself for “anti-gang” grants and other resources,” LULAC reported. …”LULAC found that during the past 24 months, over $1 million has been spent by the city to address the alleged “gang” problem, yet there is virtually no data to support that it has successfully intervened in the lives of more than six alleged gang members.”
The city is using the exaggerated gang statistics to justify the hiring of former Oxnard Police Department officers as consultants, LULAC reported.
“The impact of the exaggerated “gang” presence in Oxnard has had a devastating effect on the image of the city, its ability to maintain a vital economy, and the civil rights of our youth and their parents,” LULAC reported.
