Latino couple reflects on love for the outdoors
OXNARD — Fifteen years ago, Juan, an at-risk youth from south-central Los Angeles, stepped off a bus in Grand Teton National Park and saw the stars for the first time in his life. His experience inspired him to connect more diverse and urban youth to nature, and in the process, he met Vanessa Torres, a park ranger, and fell in love all over again.
The couple will share their experience with the outdoors in a special movie showing of “Love in the Tetons” at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2 REI Oxnard, 2700 Seaglass Way in The Collection at RiverPark, Oxnard.
The film is a ten-part series created by National Park Experience (NPX) and independent filmmakers Amy Marquis and Dana Romanoff through the National Park Service, and sponsored by REI and more than 400 Kickstarter backers. Stars of the film Juan Martinez and Vanessa Torres will make an appearance and host a Q&A at the event.
“By showing “Love in the Tetons” we provide a great example of how Latinos embrace the outdoors and make contributions to our beautiful national parks,” said Sylvia Muñoz Schnopp, outreach specialist for REI. “Juan and Vanessa are an inspiration to all and we hope it provides an open invitation for many more to opt outside,” she added.
Light refreshments and snacks will be provided. Seating is limited and reservations are required. Registration for event is available at www.rei.com/learn or (805) 981-1938.
